5 <br /> Community Preservation Committee <br /> Minutes <br /> April 7. 2009 <br /> APPOINTMENTS AND HEARINGS <br /> Y <br /> Ted Nadoln -Iii Tr ti r—Mesh ee Corms Garden: <br /> CPC member Wayne Taylor stepped down for discussion as he is a <br /> member of the executive steering committee formed to oversee the <br /> gardens. Ms. Rommelmeyer presided. <br /> The CPC Committee met with Ted ladolny and Heidi Trottier to discuss <br /> the Mashpee Community Garden proposal, The proposed project is the <br /> establishment of a community garden at the former Attaquin Acres <br /> property on Route 130 adjacent to the Herring Run. The land deemed for <br /> CPA f coding under passive recreation was purchased with Land Bank <br /> funds and qualifies for CPA funding. <br /> The Board of Selectmen have recently voted to support the project that i <br /> to consist of raised garden beds for individual use to groom'vegetables. <br /> Benefits of the program promote a healthy lifestyle, and socialization <br /> amongst residents. The gardens may also provide donations to local food <br /> pantries* Only organic fertilizers and pesticides can be used in the garden <br /> areas. <br /> To date,there has been interest from several Mashpee non-profits <br /> including the Friends of the Mashpee Library for a children's gardening <br /> program and the Life Community. <br /> It was suggested the Tribe be consulted regarding indigenous planting and <br /> farming. The"Three Sisters Garden', an effective organic gardening <br /> method used and taught by the Wampan ag's considers a mound system <br /> growing corn with beams and squash using herring as a natural fertilizer. <br /> An application for a plot rental fee was presented to the CPC for <br /> .additional review. The cost is $25 per year for a plot approximately 8 x 1 <br /> feet. A list of garden rules enforced by the garden's executive steering <br /> committee was attached. All applicants must be a Mashpee resident or tax <br /> payer. Fifteen plots are considered in Phase I. <br />
