} <br /> GLOSSARY OF TERMS <br /> ACID HYDROLYSIS <br /> The deterioration of paper based artifacts by the action of acids upon the paper fiber. <br /> LIGNIN, GROUNDWOOD <br /> Acid bearing materials found in paper made from wood fiber. <br /> FOLIO <br /> • One complete sheet from a bound volume, usually comprised of four pages. <br /> SIGNATURE <br /> A bundle of folio sheets which are folded and placed one inside the other, and then sewn <br /> into the bound volume. Usually number between four and six. <br /> MENDING AND REINFORCEMENT <br /> An archival process which involves bonding a thin, transparent, acid free substrate to each <br /> side an embrittled or fragmented paper sheet. Process may involve Cerex nylon bonded <br /> with a low temperature polyester heat set adhesive, or it may involve a thin Japanese tissue <br /> coated with an acrylic reversible heat set adhesive. (Example: Crompton's tissue or <br /> Filmoplast R.) <br /> LEAF CASTING, FILLING <br /> The filling of voids and losses in fragmented folio sheets. May be done mechanically, or <br /> with paper pulp. <br /> TAPE REMOVAL <br /> • The removal of pressure sensitive or adhesive repair tapes. May involve the use of heat, <br /> solvents, or enzymes. <br />
