GLOSSARY OF TERMS <br /> CONSERVATION <br /> The preservation treatment of antiquities utilizing accepted practices. Such practices are <br /> generally reversible, and maintain the historic integrity of the artifact. <br /> REVERSIBILITY <br /> • Characteristic of conservation practices and materials which are able to be reversed or <br /> removed. <br /> DEACIDIFICATION <br /> The removal and/or neutralization of acids, especially in paper. Generally involves the <br /> placement of an alkaline reserve into the material being deacidified. <br /> PAPER CONSERVATION <br /> Refers to specific treatments and procedures designed to preserve and maintain paper <br /> based artifacts including books, documents, maps, and works of art on paper. <br /> RESTORATION <br /> The process of returning an artifact as near as possible to an earlier original state. Includes <br /> conservation treatment necessary to preserve the artifact, as well as treatments which may <br /> be purely aesthetic in nature. <br /> ACID FREE <br /> • A material used in conservation containing no harmful acids. May be buffered with an <br /> alkaline agent. <br />
