Mr. Ball indicated that it
costs approximately $30,000 per year to install the display which includes bulb replacement, labor, the
bucket truck and removal and storage fees. All work is done by an outside contracting firm. It has
become costly for the Mashpee Pops Committee and it is the intention of the Pops Committee to
discontinue assuming costs associated to the display of the holiday lighting at this location.
If the Town of Mashpee was to take responsibility of this project, the Pops would continue funding the
display for one more season. This would allow the Department of Public Works to gain knowledge
and train in terms of installing the lighting and labourequirements. It was noted the Town of Mashpee
absorbs all costs associated to electricity.
The Board of Selectmen agreed the holiday lighting display at the Mashpee Rotary is spectacular and a
major attraction during the winter season. If the DPW were to assume this function, it was
recommended the lighting be installed during the week prior to Thanksgiving to eliminate overtime
costs. It is estimated the installation process requires eight men per day for a three-day period.
Selectman Gottlieb recommended the Board defer approval until the next meeting to obtain additional
information regarding costs associated to labor, equipment and storage, and to allow for input from the
Director of Public Works. It was agreed the Town Manager would follow up on the specifics with Mr.
Ball, and the matter would be scheduled as an agenda topic of discussion on Monday.
