A H EE CONSERVATION COMMISSION <br /> MEETING of FEBRUARY 8. 1990 <br /> Commissioners Present: Gertrude Simmons, Joseph Burns, Patrick Coffey, <br /> Richard Halpern. <br /> Robert Sherman,' Conserv at i on Agent, and Paul Somerville, Shellfish Warden, <br /> The greeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. <br /> 7:00 Duncan York interview: Mr, York gave his educational and business <br /> background. <br /> When asked if he would be willing to accept other responsibilities and projects <br /> Mr. York stated he would, within the constraints ofhis ,fob. <br /> Concerning the most significant issue with Mashpee wetlands, Mr, York felt it is <br /> accelerated putrification of Mashpee ponds from sewage and phosphates from septic <br /> systems. A solation would be td ban the use of phosphates on a regional basis <br /> which he had seen accomplished with a local ordinance. <br /> To better educate the public, Mr. York stated public attitude is a major part <br /> of the good working of ars commission. He suggested literature be distributed. <br /> Concerning the biggest problems facing the ommission, Mr. York felt there is a <br /> lot of pressure from the business community not to see any new construction <br /> stopped for environmental reasons because of the slump. This was his experience <br /> in the western areas of the country. <br /> He cited Mash pee's unique problems as growth, road runoff into shellfish beds. and <br /> bays, and the political atmosphere. <br /> It was noted for the record that Mr. York -hays attended several meetings and an <br /> on--site. <br /> 7: 15 Frank D. Homeyer Interview: Mr. Homeyer gage his background information. <br /> He has attended several meetings, an on-site and a seminar. <br /> To get people to do something for the environment he suggested ,giving handouts <br /> to school children and to take thea on field trips. <br /> For problems unique to the- area he singled out New Seabury with the condominiums <br /> built so close to the water. In 1962-64 there was nothing on dehu Pond; the <br /> change has been drastic. <br /> When asked, if given a case where a conflict between development and ecology <br /> of values, how he would handle it, he stated he would try to be diplomatic but <br /> having seen what is happening he would have to lean to the ecology. <br /> Nor. Homeyer was asked if he would also accept an appointment as an associate <br /> or consultant and he stated he would; no matter what, he wound be involved. <br /> Mr. York agreed that he would accept any appointment also. <br /> Mr. Homeyer and Nor. York were thanked for their interest in the Commission. <br />
