Apri 1 , 1990
Page 140
Ms Behrman stated their assertion confused her, that this
mown area was of more value to wildlife habitat than the
natural succession that would take place if they ceased to
rnow. Also , they are taking out cover with the Autumn olive .
Mr. Abrahamson stated there is no problem with leaving them
there . his Behrman suggested substituting something else .
-fir. Abrahamson gave an overview: The pond, in addition to a
natural resource, is a recreational resource . They would
like to put in a small dock; the water is approximately
feet deep. They propose a defined accessp stnedut path
with railroad ties to prevent erosion, to the pond ' s edge for
skating. Spartina is proposed alone the edge of the
waterway. There is a pre-existing drain with ,no sign of
erosion where they plan to plant some of the grass as well .
Ifs Behrman asked if there was a drywell and was told there
are catch basins at the notary.
Mr. Abrahamson stated along the path parallel with Rook
Landing Road there is erosion and they are proposing flush
railroad ties . Any disturbed areas will be reseeded with the
conservation seed mix . A dashed line on the plan shows a
water course where they are proposing to put Spartina. There
is a dead oak tree they would like to remove that they
consider a safety hazard.
Mr. Abrahamson asked fir. Zeppenfeld if New Seabury would be
willing to replace it with a Tupelo. Mr. Zeppenfeld agreed .
Mr. Coffey asked if the mowing would be self-limiting in the
future .
'fir. Zeppenfeld stated they would like to keep the grass at
the shone line mowed down. They would like to be able to mow
up to the shore line once a year and right up to the path
trice in the summer to keep the path clear.
Mr. Sherman stated he had been at the site with Michael
roet ke prior to the mowing and Mr. Groetzke pointedly asked
if he could cut down the vegetation and he was pointedly told
, not Without a filing and thea it was done . what New
eabury refers to as nuisance vegetation he feels is wildlife
habitat and is a dwelling for animals . It was a callous
mistake .
Ms Behrman asked Mr. Zeppenfeld to - define "nuisance
vegetation ' .
fir. Zeppenfeld stated, in the case of the bridle path, it
would be limbs in the %,lay of moving down the pate and as far
s the pond function for recreational purposes , the grass
g tting real high becomes a nuisance and they want to keep
