.k
Minutes of the Meeting of the Mashpee Americans with Disabilities Act Committee,
October 1 2, Zoo
The Mashpee Americans with Disabilities Act Committee met Thursday, October 12
2006 t Mashpee Town Hall Meeting Room #3.
Members in attendance:
William Dundon co-chair)
Charles Maintains
Merton Sapers
Robert Wooldridge
Theresa Cook, Board of Selectmen Liaison
The minutes of the September 14, 2006 meeting were reviewed and approved.
Terrie reported Trish asked her to pass on that she did get to Roche Brothers before
Charlie after the September 14, 2006 meetm* g and did manage to get her peaches on while
they were still on sale. VMW!
Mert reported Chief Collis supports the idea of establishing a civilian bandicapped
parking patrol program. The patrols will be formed using volunteers from TRIAD and
graduates of the Civilian Police Academy. To date, at least two people have volunteered
to participate. When 5 or 6 people have volunteered, arrangements will be made with the
Police Department to develop the procedures, conduct the required personnel checks and
necessary training. When this program gots up and run ng we will have to get together
with the Town Manager to discuss the possibility of earmarking some monies from the
fines from this program for ADA--related purposes.
Charlie is working with Catherine Laurent, DPW, to make sure handicapped parking
signs and spaces at town facilities are in compliance with state and federalreluiremerts.
He also has discussed the requirement with Ira Brown to insure the schools are using the
proper signs. Charlie's research of regulations raises some questions of interpretation
regarding the information the signs must have as opposed to what may be allowable. He
intends to disc ss this and other compliance matters with Harvey Fritz of TRIAD to
insure the interpretations are consistent. Mert has a list of addresses of business owners
to give to Harvey so that letters can be sent informing the owners of the need to insure
they are using the proper signs, Bob and/or Dill will work with Harvey to tiry to identify
the remaining addresses.
Bob mentioned that he did not see any designated handicapped park-Ing at Oktoberfest.
There were the few regular handicapped spaces in the library lot but your could not get to
them because Steeple Street was blocked to vehicular traffic at both ends. Ti rrie
confirmed this impression. She made a point of checking the parking situation and also
noted there was none. She will raise the issue with the Town Manager and the Special
Events Committee to see if this can be corrected for fature events. This is one more
