Catherine reported South Cape Civic Association (SCCA)will
procure standard street signs for the route through their community from Great Oak Load
to Pontiac Load. This will address the specific complaint of Mr. Charles Papagni. of
Pontiac Road. At this point it Xs not dear'f SCCA intends to obtain standard signs for k
k
the remainder of heir community.
This led to a discussion of the possibility of requiring standard street signs throughout
Mashpee. Catherine pointed out DPW regulations require standard signs in neer
r
developments. There currently is no specific requirement or Planning Dept. by-later, for }
existing developments to use standard signs; however, Catherine noted that PW is
supposed to plow only hose roads having proper street signs. This policy is not strictly
adhered to but potentially would provide some leverage toward requiring use of standard
signs throughout the town.
We were fortunate to have Toni Fdala, Town Planner, and Fire Dept Chief, George
Baler present for this discussion. Chief Baker made a compelling case for requiring {
f
standard signs on the grounds of public safety. Although most of 1ashpee's emergency
vehicles have onboard equipment for quickly locating Mashpee addresses adjacent towns
do not, Chief Baler indicated at least 0%of emergency calls are handled by out-of-
torn resources. In hese cases,non-standard signs pose a distinct risk of slowing
response time in emergencies, f
t
All present agreed a new town by-law requiring use of standard street signs would be the
best solution. This by-saw probably would be similar to the current by-law requiring
visible numbers on all homes. Chief Baler and Catherine agreed to draft a by-law for
consideration during the February 10 committee meeting. The proposed by-law will then
be submitted to the Selectmen and Town Manager prior to the February 14 deadline for
items to be included in the warrant for the May 2005 Town Meeting.
}
}
:r
