i
is
Minutes of the Meeting of the Mashpee Americans with Disabilities Act Committee,
October 13, 2005
The Mashpee ee America s with Disabilities Act Committee met Thursday, October 13,
2005 at Mashpee Town Hall Meeting Room# .
}
Members er in attendance:
William Dud ori
}
MarilynFarren
Charlie 1 Iainta i
Robert Wooldridge
The minutes of the September 8, 2005 meeting were reviewed and approved. }
The committee received a copy of a letter Tom.Peronti of the Mashpee Commons
Limited Partnership MCLP sent the Mashpee Building Department outlining measures
MCLP plans on taking to correct access problems noted during the wallthroughs with
ADA Committee members and Mr. Ralph Hickey, Massachusetts Office on Disabilities
(MOD) access specialist. Some measures have already been implemented and their plans
for additional work are very encouraging. The Building Department will advise MCLP {
of the committee's request the patches at the curb cuts be maintained to allow for
smooth transition, i.e., do not remove any patching material and create a"I'ip
" as
suggested by Mr. Richey." Additionally,the Building Department will inform MCLP of
the need for a walkway from the parking lot by the medical clinic to the sidewalk. The
Building Department will continue to monitor MCLP progress through to completion o
all required corrections. Tom Feronti and other interested MCLP officials will be invited
to update the committee in January or February 2006.
The committee discussed how hest to deal with the deletion of two ADA-related warrant
items by the Town Manager and Selectmen. It was concluded the most effective }
approach will be to activelyloth the selectmen.to give them a better understanding of
g
and appreciation for the activities of the committee. Establishing a point-of-contact or w
liaison on the Board of Selectmen would be a good first step. If these efforts are
successful,the warrant items will be proposed for the May Town.Meeting. The warrant
item amending the handicapped parking hylar did survive the cut and ill be voted on at
the October 17,2005 Town Meeting. If necessary, Bob will move the item at the '}
meeting.
x$
The committee was advised that the Town Manager has agreed to our recommendation
that Communications Access Realtime Translation(CART) service be provided at the
Town Meeting to enable the hearing impaired to participate more equally. Affangements
have been made for Ms. Stefanie Farrell to provide this service. }
The amount and safety of handicapped seating at the high school auditorium continues to
be a matter of concern especially for Town Meeting attendees. The Town Manager and
some other town officials believe seating is adequate and no safety problems exist with IF}
x{
y
