ft
Catherine Laurent, Deputy Director of DPW, gave us her take on the issue of requiring
street signs on private ways. The bottom lin i
is; it s a"bottom line' issue, Le., ceding is
the main concern, DPW does budget for emergency repairs on private ways and uses
most of it already. There may be small sums available at the end of the year to use for
street signs but this is not guaranteed. She suggested enforcing the existing plovn*ng
p as
olio leverage to convince the private communities to upgrade on their own initiative.
g
Catherine updated us on the automatic door project. She has been looking into the cost of
installing automatic doors in multiple locations Town Hall with a total cost in the
$40,000 rane. The committee gave her our opinion that the project should be limited to
g
just the front entrance. ale more doors would be desirable, it 1s not financially feasible
to install more than one at this time. We also advised her that an automatic door at the
entrance to Quashnet School should be the next priority. With that guidance she will be
better able to focus the search for hies.
Bill again reported the reduction in the number of marked handicapped parking spaces t
g p
South Cape Beach. Catherine indicated DPW would check on the situation and tame
necessary corrective action.
Mr. Joseph Hedge, 34 Coombs Lane, has requested the committee see what can be done
to construct improve sidewalks along Great Neck Road North. He would like to attend
Tow.Meeting and get to the Stop& Shop but finds it too dangerous traveling along
Great beck Road North in his wheelchair using what is essentially a breakdown lane.
Catherine appreciates the safety issue but, like everything else, funding is a problem.
Immediate action is not possible;however, DPW does construct and/or improve
sidewalks as road improvements are undertaken.
We discussed the initial results of the recent valkthrough of Mashpee Commons by
Ralph Richey, an access specialist with the MA Office on Disabilities. Mr. Hickey Will
be providing a written report. Commons officials have indicated willingness to take
corrective measures once the"busy season"ends. Charlie and Richard stated that
experience has shown that we must keep the pressure on Commons officials until actions
are completed. Charlie also requested the Building Department be informed of any
access violations noted anywhere in Mashpee.
The next meeting was set for September 8, 2005. Marilyn will invite Gus Fredericks,
Mashpee Leisure Services to attend.
Respectfully bmi ed,
Bert oo e
Secretary
