4
MA HP EE CONSERVATION COMMISSION
Meeting of duly 31 , 1986
_ PRESENT: V. Louise Behman, Chairman, Carol Jacobson , Elliot Rosenberg.,
Mary Brown and -Gerald Sprout.
ABSENT: Larch duNPont ertrude Ferriday and Stephen BanTol .
GUEST: Chief Edward Harti n, Mashpee Fire Dept.
large Conti agent of interested parties -and abutters from the Santui t Pond
area were in attendance -regarding the .rebel—Tows Development at Beechwood
Point. Chief Hartin -was asked to sJpea .
The Chief stated when the .developer approached some months ago, a varioety of
options were outlined as t how adequate fire protection could be provided
and still meet development objectives, One option which he chose to proceed
with is to provide access to the waters of Santui t Pond for fire protection
purposes through the use of a dry hydrant. That was riot the Eire Department' s
s
first choice. He outlined the options given to the- developer.
1 , To reduce the size of the individual buildings and separate thea further,
which it is assumed would not be acceptable to the developer for economic
reasons,
2. To increase the capabilities of his waster system, which may also have not
been economically attractive. The Fire Dept. analyzed the total number of
gallons per minute required to del with a fire at these buildings and he
would only be able to provide of that water flow from his water system
for domes t i c use so they were 1 ooking for somethi ng add i ti on al .
. The last option given to hire was most acceptable to the fire dept. which
was to install residential sprinkler systems in the buildings which could
e done at a fairly reasonable cost and which in the long tern i s more
attractive due to the. fact the system will pay for itself inside of three
,years , not necessarily attractive to the developer but to the person who
ends up owning the unit. It is most attractive to the Fire Dept. because
of the fact that given a system of this nature,, any fire that would occur
in these structures i s more than likely going to be confined in the room
of origin and controlled by the -sprinkler system which is attractive due
to the substantial distance from the station and the residential nature
of the complex.
Chief martin further stated the developer chose the option which gave him
some other options that he probably wanted, but may not have been in the
best interest of conservation.
The water supply for the residential sprinkler system would be from a dom-
estic water supply, from a well . The fi ow required is 2 - 0 gallons per
minute. The Eire Dept. cannot force the cieveloper to put in a sprinkler
system. It is hoped to show the developer that it is to his and the pond's
best advantage to do so.
