MASHPEE CONSERVATION COMMISSION MEETING OF JUNE 151 1989 Commissioners present :. G rt ud Simmons , Mary Marsters ,, Patrick Coff , Joseph Burns , Elliot Rosenberg . Also present were Robert Sherman , Conservation Agent ; Paul Somerville ,, Shellfish Officer ;, Flo n Wall , Associate Member . The meeting was called to order at 7 : 05 p ,m, MASHPEE WOODLANDS COMMITTEE : Mary Marsters Marsstood down . Joseph Burns was acting chairman . Joanne Eerragam o , Chairman introduced members : Mrs . Pierce , Bob Sposta , Dean Bates , Bill Bryant and Earle Marsers . She outlined what she had spoken to Peter Jacobson about . Their program began with the application in 1985 for Self Help monies , They guide themselves by the prospectus and management plan submitted . $3-1/2 million has been acquired from the state and as explained to Peter Jacobson , this money obligates them to fulfill the responsibilities as outlined in these programs . She stated Mr . Jacobson felt they should pretty Bruch let sleeping dogs lie . In regards to trail maintenance , they have followed this procedure since 1987 . Every trail program is discussed at their committee meetings and minutes of all meetings submitted to the Con e ry a i t n Commission . They then prepared the RDA and the first trail program was set up with acting agent at that time , John V rkonda . They have had trails , an osprey platform a-nd the big parking lot at Quinaquisset with paper work ' submitted . They have had on-site visits by John Varkonda , Lisa Hanscom and most recently on the trail in quest- ion , uost- ion , they had fob Sherman and Tori. Fuda l a who looked at the. trail before any work was done . A person from the Soil conservation Commission and someone from Greenbriar have been there a number of tines and , most recently , Bill Clark and Bill Trask from the county Extension Service have visited . These peoplell have been asked if there is some type f habitat that should be avoided . A possible fox den was pointed out and a trail rerouted . To their knowledge , there isn ' t anything that is an endangered species . Mrs . Ferragamo stated they may not be knowledgeable in terms of being naturalists but have sought professional people to guide thea . The volunteers do not use any power tools , they hand clip , after which the Gravely , a lawn mower , comes in . Some huckleberries and wild blue- berries are cut out . Last spring , 12 dozen daffodils were planted and- they are replanting trees and checkerberries . They are not destroying the area as implied . A letter from Bill McKay was read stating "perpetual maintenance" was part of the original application . He stated he was not cutting paths to the river edge , the closest he came to the river was a 40 foot high bluff about loo feet from the river providing the publ is with a scenic overlook . From there the route follows ars already existing path plus a cut back to the parking lot . He did not tear up all the humus , cut no l ady s l i peers and affected no endangered species . 1hereve r he has main- tained ain-toined trails or creamed small clearings for benches , it has created new growth of these species resulting from additional sunlight afforded .
