Mr. Whritenour asked when are we going to talk about Permits
for dredging. Mr. Hanks stated that Waterways is working on
Permits for dredging Mashpee River, Popponesset Bay, and Waquoit
Bay. Mr. Hanks stated there are two Parts to the Process:
(1) determine the cost and feasibility of new Permits for MashPee
River and Ockway Bay, and ( 2) renew existing Permits. We will
hire professionals to Prepare the Permit application. The money
available for permits and engineering is $15, 000, and we will
go out to bid. Bob Whritenour is helping with the bid package.
Mr. Whritenour suggested prioritizing which waterway gets dredged
first. Mr. Hanks stated CRM should do the prioritizing, and
Waterways should work on permitting. Mr. York stated that
Popponesset should get priority for dredging.
A Sub-Committee was formed to explore Aquaculture with Rick
York as Chair, Perry Ellis, Steve Ball, Steve Cadrin, and Bob
Sherman as alternate.
Algae Mitigation Project: Mr. Hanks reported that the Monomoscoy
Improvement Trust held a meeting and discussed mining algae
out of Hamblin Pond in an effort to save the eelgrass. They
proposed removing one acre of seaweed as a trial effort. Linda
Deegan has applied for a grant to do a similar project. The
seaweed could be used as compost along with leaves in gardening.
Mr. York is going to enlist the JTEC crew to help rake out some
of the seaweed.
Popponesset Spit Remedial Planning: It was decided to hold
off forming a sub committee. Mr. Ellis reported there are
several washover spots, and he asked Mr. Sherman if there is
anything we can do to stop it. Mr. Sherman stated that you
can add vegetation to sand, but there is a funding issue not
a permit issue. He suggested possibly putting the spoils there
from the dredging . Mr. Whritenour noted that it is private
property. Mr. York stated that the Save Popponesset group could
do it. Mr. Ellis stated that if it breaks through, it will
create a shallow flow and instant shoaling making it
non-navigable. Mr. Sherman stated it would cost millions to
put source material there.
It was decided to table the stairway at Wading Place Road,
Popponesset.
The meeting adjourned at 5: 00 p.m.
Mary Gelsthorge
-3-
