C
Mr.. Hanks found the dredging permit issued in 1992 for some
emergency dredging around the tip of Popponesset Island. He
is wa i ting for an answer from the Army cors of Engineers whether
this permit is still good or needs to he redone,,
Most likely , anythinLj to do with Conservation has to be reviewed.
This i s .another one to watch and see what will happen.
We received a proposal from Aubrey 12-8-97 that did not include
a water quality raodelincj task desired her Brian Howes. Jim Hanks
has proposed some changes to the proposal , and he will get
together with Bob Hamilton and Brian. Howes to work out the
sdecific data. Mr. Hanks is trying to have this task priced
se0arately so as to he paid f roin an account de f f Brent from the
Wind Chime account,.
Mr, Hanks is working with Brian on channel sizes, he will run
scenerios usint 30-feet and 60-feet wide channels in the upper
reaches of the River above Orsini Beach to compare the results
of predicted f lushin . The scenarios will compare the results
of removing the dredged Riaterial versus leaving the material
in the water in the form of islands .
Mr. Hanks would like to qo to the P lanni.nq Hoard in January
if we have a dro o sa 1 f row Aubrey and refresh their rtieyiiory on
what has been done and paid for and ask for more money to
continue the studies .
Federal No Discharge Area Desi nation: Mr. Hanks has not heard
anything and had nothing to report. Mr. Hams will follow u
with Peter Dini io and Ken Malloy.
NEW BUSINESS: A discussion occurred about building a small
marina at South cape Beach off Will ' s Work Load. Nor* Ellis
stated there is a demand for slips . The state offered to }wild
a raiap and 10 darking s daces for free if Mashpee would build
the docks ,, There is a potential for $100 , 000 income from rentincj
'. dock space. W' l l i s Work Road has uhf.is across and the slips
would be made available to the public. The State would also
z:
Maintain the road and build a Harbormaster building*
MrHanks re aced a six-point response to Ed Baker ' s letter
of December 2 , 1997 , and he gave his comment s
i.
Mr., Baker stressed the issue that there are three reasons for
dredging, not 'ust the nutrient problem. Where is the navigation
rohl ern and. bacterial contamination that causes shellfish
closures. Each of these needs to be addressed.
