Rick explained his report at great length and led a detailed discussion about the
causes and impact that bacteria have on our water quality. There has been a lot of
speculation and controversy from blaming increased population we have in the
summer months to the presence of Wildlife, as well as the towns dog population and
the amount of fecal droppings that they produce.
What Ir.'York was able to conclude through his extensive research and testing is that
there is a combination of causes, concerns, and issues that need to be continually
observed. Mr. orb's report is a start and provides residents with good solid
preklininary data. Most of this prehmffiary data supports the theory of wildlife
producing fecal coliform contamination.
Mr. orfurther informed us that in the interest of trg to solve the problem, the
hel-fish Department and theD.P.W. has written some grant proposals. they have
also put some catch basins at Meetinghouse Road,, Although there is still'a lot to be
done to ans rer the problem of bacteria, r. Fork feels that while they are work' to
control road run off, there isn't much at this point they can do regarding the presence
of wildlife.
Steve Cadrir asked if copies of this report could be made available. Rick York
promised that he would work towards providg copies of the report and charts that
were presented.
Jim Harks offered his experience with graphics to Rick when he prepares the report
for distribution. John Swartzbaugh offered some suggestions as well.
Steveadrin and Jim Hanks agreed to defer the distribution of Rick's report until a
later date.
. Shellfish or table Repo —RI&York
^ - _.,.
Marlurtis' aquaculture grant Hamblin fond has finally been-approved.
The Ma.shpee River is now closed. Shoestring Bay is closed. The north end of
Hamblin Fond is closed. These closures are all due to contamination.
Jim His asked Rick if he had gained any more insight as to what is going on m
Hamblin. pond. Rick responded that Hamblin Pond is gofg to have an expanded
grater quality report done on it. once again, the contamination in Hamblin fond is
due to wildlife and road runoff from.Dutchman's Brook corning directly from
hyo norno scot'Road from the new Wildlife refine and also from Redbrook Stream
coMM9 in on the town line.
Jehu Pond is closed for management to let the shellfish grog up, and wiU remain
closed until, lune o"". Waquoit Bay, the Faln^iouth side opened May 1". The
harvesting of quahogs is going quite well in that area as well as some scallop seed
being spotted. These favorable, early reports may mean a successful scallop return
this season,,
