27 duly 2000
Page 1 .
being put before the horse and the contamination should be stopped from
leaking in and then ileal with the situation.
Mr. smith there are three parts to the project. To deal with ghat is in the
pond now; they are working on the discharge piece. They have done the
emergency response and have shut off the treatment plant and it is no longer
providing phosphorus. They shut off the storm drains. There are major
reductions. They cannot just pump the phosphorus out so they are testing
that the next year and looking forward to dealing with the remaining
contribution.
Another question was raised, is the treatment they are doing flushing the
water column? what is to say in two or five years from now, the phosphorus
is at the sane level and more metals are being added to the bottom of the
pond.
Dr. Mitchell stated it is not necessarily an attempt to flush the Phosphorus
from the water column, it is more to prevent the regeneration of oxygen-peer
conditions. They want to put a cap on the bottom to keep the phosphorus
from coming up again. It is long teen management of the watershed.
Al Orlando, who has lived on the pond since 1373, stated it has been thrown
around about endangered species and fish, in -the years that he has been
there, her has seem a complete decline in certain species on the pond at this
present time. He has not seem a frog in three years, or crayfish. The last
time he caught a fish from that pond, it had so many papilomas on it, you
could not eat it anyway. He could not see how the alum could do any damage
to the pond in its present state; if anything, it would help. He would life to
see a working committee get together and iron out the differences so that this
treatment can be at least tried, hopefully, this year. He has been working on
this problem with the Ashumet valley property owners, he has been doing
this for 17 years. Finally, there is a group of professionals hero and people
here are questioning them. He thought these experts should be listened to,
instead of questioning them. He did not think it makes any difference if the
barge is a Cadillac or a Ford. The Commission is making conditions and
these men are the experts.
Mr. Sherman stated derogatory statements should not be made about Steve
Hurley and Bili Fisher, they are professional, capable, men. The Commission
has to have a few more details to see whose picture makes more sense.
