27 July 2000
Page 7.
Dr. Howes stated they would not treat the whole pond, only that area, and
they will get improvement in the system. They are going after the hot spot
and the application will be done in an area that does not support animals a
this time. They expect to see immediate improvement.
Another issue that came up is pH. Measurements were taken in 1993. All of
their data falls within this range. There is a very tight bundle of phi in the
highly acceptable range, in a range around 6.5.
Dr. Dave Mitchell was introduced. He is a certified lakes manager and was
brought in as they move to the implementation phase. He will speak directly
to the details ofthe application.
Dr. Mitchell distributed .a handout concerning treatment of other lakes i
New England.
Mr. Sherman stated a brief discussion of the methodology would be
appropriate.
Dr. Mitchell will help implement monitoring when it does occur. By reducing
the overall load, they are looking to not simply just make a chemical change
but an improvement of water quality and clarity of the water by reducing the
mount of growth in the water and to increase oxygenation of the water.
Mr. Sherman stated the Commission needs to hear the methodology and hove
it is going to be done.
The Chair stated the Commission would like to know how and by whom, with
what equipment, etc.
Dr. Mitchell stated there is a species of special concern in the pond. There is
also a concern in terns of aluminum toxicity of the fish. This is a short-terra
effect. It is not a human health concern. It is important to keep the
aluminum buffered using a sodium aluminate and the pH very carefully
between 6.5 and 8. This will require careful testing of the lake water.
The Chair asked if they were reach to give the specifics on the monitoring?
Dr. Mitchell was willing to do so. He stated it is an unusual decision for
Conservation -Commission to look over when looking at lake restoration. The
application Is going to be targeted to a depth of 40 or greater. It is 15% 0-f Clic
