January 2001
In her professional opinion, IIs for tos stated in spite of the fact that
this project does not meet the Performance standards she just read, she
would recominend the following, to allow, giving consideration to the
amount of boating access that occurs here, to allow there to be a one
more time dredging event to occur under an order of Conditions good for
three years. In that order, she would recommend the following
conditions:
1. To strongly recommend to the proponent that they investigate
alternatives for future boating access to po ponesset Creel.
2. 'There should be a survey of the actual square footage of salt marsh
and the location of salt marsh adjacent to it within 100' of the
proposed dredge channel.
3. Conduct a post nourishment engineered plan with a 5o' apart cross-
sectional surveys of nourished dune shoring slope ratios. This
information should be submitted in writing to the Commission by
May 30of 2001.
. The maximum width of the proposed- channel shall be reduced from
0' to a maximum width of 3 ' in order to avoid over-steeping of the
landward side of the dune on popponesset-spit, as well as protect the
marsh and revetment to the north of the Channel.
. only compatible grain size sediment shall be allowed to be used for
beach nourishment purposes and in a location approved by the
Commission, or it's staff.
At the conclusion of recommendations, the Chair called for questions
from the Commission.
Nis Moore asked if the first time this was ever dredged was in 1961 Mr.
Hayes advised it was 1962. she asked how many times since that it has
been dredged? Mr. Hayes stated -he knew r of three times but there right
be more. she asked if his argument t is that because it has been dredged
in the past, they should be allowed to continue to dredge in the future?
Mr. Hayes stated his argument is that the Bay needs the flushing i
order to remain as a viable ecosystem.
