January Zoo
Page 12.
organization that was started in 1986 because there was no action by
any town board that was taping any action to get dredging done in
Popponesset Bay and the outer channel. An engineering firm was hired
by Save the Bay and paid to obtain the permits. When the Town and the
Commonwealth realth f Massachusetts carne up with $150,000 and $50,000
respectively, there was a $75,000 shortfall. Save the Bay raised the
money to get the dredging done in the outer channel and Popponesset
Bay. They pumped that sand the entire length of the Spit. It lasted from
1987 to 1992. They had no vegetation or snow fencing put in place, for
obvious reasons. In 1992 Hurricane Bob cut right in at the end of
Popponesset Island. Again, Save the Bay worked closely with Bob
Sherman and the State agencies in a matter ofthree creeks got the
permits to dredge that sane spot as being talked about tonight. From
1992 to 2001 that Spit is still there, a lot of it has gone out into the
ocean, but it is still there. They are not an adversary, they are asking
here tonight help with a problem common to the entire 'Town of Mashpee.
He is looping for yelp from some Board in the Town. What he has heard
tonight such as looking to do further stuffs, etc., he believes that as a
Board and homeowners that are putting up their o v money, is out of
the realm of their line of duty. He did prepare an executive summary
and distributed it to the Commission. He advised he highlighted and
tabbed page.
Mr. Harrington stated at the last meeting no one wanted to tally 'about
Brian Howes study which this 'Town paid $150,000 for. It addressed
duality of water in Popponesset Bay. He asked why is the duality of
grater in Popponesset Bay better than oeway Bay and better than
lashpee River? It is for one major reason, circulation of water and
flushing action. The comment to cut the channel down in size gill cut
down the circulation of grater and the flushing action. He was not
pleased and asked the Board to look at that issue closely from that
standpoint and also from the standpoint of safety, boating and
swimming. To narrow that, would cause people that are corning out or
corning in, it may be creating a major hazard.
Illir. Harrington referred to comments re alternatives to dredging, in 1987
t' the suggestion of the Conservation Commission, Save the Bay was
asked to do soil samples all over Popponesset Bay and the little tributary
that corner out onto the Popponesset Island-Bridge. They did so, it was
$600 and submitted it and got Conservation and Array Corps of
Engineers said we could not dredge up Popponesset Bay, around. the tip
f Popponesset Island, because the stuff was almost as bad then as it i
up the Ma ee Diver, all much silt, and you name it. They could not
p
