January 2001
Page 13.
put it on the Spit or anywhere in Mashpee. The Array Corps said they
did not thinly we should put 1t on.a barge and haul 1t out to sea because
they did not life what they saver there. That idea fell apart. some of the
alternatives being proposed won't happen because of the soil samples in
that area.. He would welcome, and would be willing to ,pay, to prove that
you still can't dredge in Popponesset Bay in and around the northern tip.
That is the only other area you can do it. He asked, what are the
alternatives? Ms Boretos made some great points tonight about 1938
but from 1935 to 1962 the fact remains that Poneset Creek was the
equivalent ofWollaston Beach, it was a muddy backwater that stunk.
People do have the right to good water quality.
Mr. Darrington stated the Harbormaster is in support and there is
three pageo n ilation by Jim Hanks of the Waterways Commission, also
in support. He asked for the Commission to bend on some of these
issues and thanked there.
Gerry Daly, with the Waterways Commission, asked Mr. Ellis concerning
the comment about going down to 35', if that makes it essentially a one-
way street? Mr. Ellis stated it does. He further stated the Commission is
allowing theca to dredge one time, in the interest of safety, give then the
o" channel.
-reg smith, President of save the Bay, stated since Neter seabury was
built in 1962 and the groins went in, we are there now and it cannot go
back to a natural state. It is up to them to keep those channels dredged.
An alternative would be very expensive. They are funding this
themselves and not asking the town for funds. It is very important to
the whole community. If it is allowed to deteriorate, it will have an effect
on the whole New seabury area. It is not a big project when you look at
what is happening in osterille. The amount of material that was moved
is staggering.
Nathan Berkowitz advised he was involved in securing donations for all
of the above reasons. It is important this project get clone. He has a
problem with the one-tine dredging. He would life the Board to keep an
open mind arra would prefer not to have the one year condition hanging
over their heads. The depth of the opening prohibits the seals from
corning in. There are more year-round residents with larger houses
being built and the effluent from the septicsystems; this needs to get
flushed out. He hopes everyone can work together.
Mr, Sherman agreed with Mr. Ellis that the 501 should be. allowed.
