i
Vegetation - If at least fifty (SOW) percent of the plants
are salt tolerant parts per thousands) , the stream is tidally
dominated or estuarine. This aspect bei.ng the most difficult to
determine. Some plants studied have proven to be tolerant above
the one hundred twenty-five foot area.
Stream Morphology - when the sides of the strewn channel
diverge, the area is probably located outside of the riverain
system and into a more estuarine system. A combination of these
elements should result in agreement of the point of transition
from tidally dominated to freshwater system.
Mr. Sherman mentioned the DEP Delineation of wetlands
criteria includes evidence of hydrology, soils, and plant
community. Determination is made if two out of the three
elements indicate wetland. He is particularly interested in
the majority findings.
Salinity Measurements - "Criteria Applied to 125 feet
Upstream from Concrete Weir" References were being made as to
where salinity measurements had been taken in order to compile
the data (vertical samplings, from bottom to top) .
Some samples had been taken from Shoestring Bay and used
as the benchmark. Samplings were also taken along the Quaker
Run Riverfront area.
Water Depth - Relates to a tidal amplitude. If tidal
changes in the stream water depth at high tide are at least twice
as great than in the strewn at low tide, and if tidal changes in
water depth are regular, the stream is tidally dominated.
vegetation - If at least fifty . percent of the plants
are salt tolerant, parts per thousand are greater) the stream
is tidally dominated.
Diane Boretos challenged this criteria using North liver
brackish area as an example.
Michael Talbot requested a copy of the plant listings
determined to be salt tolerant be make available to the
Comm s s i on.
Mr. Sherman informed the Commission that he and Joanne
Maramuto have identified the dominant plants according to DEP
criteria, being seven in neer, five of the seven 7 have
been proven to be salt tolerant.
The Chairman asked the significance of using the 125 ft.
measurement. Mr. DiGregorio replied the 125 f t. is somewhat
arbitrary, that all three criteria were used in an attempt to
justify the fresh water influence.
_1 -
