Re Mashpee Kiger dredging, Elliot reported on meeting he and Jack had with Mr. Hanks and Herb silver of the Waterways Commission. There was agreement that it does not make sense to talk further about the stenberg property. They then went over in some detail the various proposals about dredging the Mashpee Diver from some loo ft. up to ,ono+ ft. Two interesting things came up, on which they all pretty much agreed. 1 There is a shorter area which had not been mentioned before (shorter than the 3,000 ft. figure which had been used) which made sense and would be able to be adapted to the ockway Bay area for depositing the silt. 2 There has been encouraging news about activity by the corps of Engineers with respect to setting up an off shore dumping facility in Buzzards Bay somewhere on this side of the Cape. The group is trying to go forward with this, and it will be presented in more detail to the members of our Commission and the Waterways commission and see what the reactions are. Jack pointed out that by no means were they speaking for the Commission. It started out as an information echainge because it was obvious that our Commission was not getting all the information that was being generated by the Woods Hole group and given to the Waterways ys Corr mission. so they thought they should take a positive stance and say "Let's sit down and talk about it." Because of the poor drainage situation and the height of the location in the stenberg parcel, they thought this parcel was not a viable option, which suited Jack and Elliot fine. Elliot said there was an interesting reason as to why the four of them agreed to consider and bring to the respective Boards this new proposal. 1.e., the Wate rways Commission reported that evidently there is a steal lowing of the river as it goes up and then there was a deepening, and maybe it made sense to investigate and consider stopping at the point where it starts to deepen. Jack said if it has to go to Ockway Bay landing site, ghat he refers to as scenario 2 is the best option. The long-time consideration that he has is that when they Mart to work, he's very concerned for them in tens of ock ray. They really didn't seem to have a good handle on ockway. People at High Ridge on the other side of ockway Bay would be very concerned if there's an ockway problem n there, and the whole work could get stopped. So the best solution is an off-shore dump. Bob stated that we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that if they do exactly as they say, there is going to be an environmental impact to the adjacent salt marsh and fresh water interface simply from the drainage of the waterway sediments, so there are issues to be resolved beyond the general controversy. Elliot said he thinks there was a recognition of that at the meeting.
