Michael Talbot mentioned an effort that Falmouth is doing on the Issue of landscape
and lawn fertilizing. They used some of their AFCEE money to develop a Fertilizer
Committee that the selectmen have approved. Mike was asked to be one of the
consultants or experts. He shored a brochure which they send out to all residents
once a year, telling what to do, ghat not to do. He said we might think about piggy-
backing on this or incorporating some of these concepts in an effort in Mashpee. The
Woods Hole study, done at the salt ponds in Falmouth, indicates that as much as 20%
of the nutrient loading that has severely impacted those salt ponds has come from
landscape fertilizers -- phosphate and nitrogen fertilizers from lawns particularly. This
is part of their effort to mitigate problem that by educating people how to be more
careful. Mike said he was asked to write an article on their behalf concerning other
options of vegetation along shorelines, etc.
Elliot was highly in favor of it, but he thought vire should investigate the costs.
