• MASHPEE CONSERVATION COMMISSION
Minutes of September 4, 2003
Public Hearing
Mashpee Town Hall Meeting Room 3
Commissioners present: Jack Fitzsimmons, Elliot Rosenberg, Cass Costa,
Stephanie Jones, Leonard Pinaud, Ralph Shaw and Michael Talbot.
Staff present: Robert Sherman, Agent; Frances Wise, Board Secretary
Jack Fitzsimmons, Chairman, called the meeting to order at 6:55 p.m.
Public Hearing: none.
Non-Hearing Agenda
Old Business:
1. Violation at end of Porthole Road and Mashpee River Woodlands. Bob said he
reported this significant violation to the Commission earlier, where a lot of trees were
cut down on our land last year. He has been working with the Police Department and
• they have not been able to ascertain who did it, although there are some ideas on it.
It's a mess and Bob has gotten a bid from Ace Arborculture to clean it up for $300,
which he thinks is very reasonable. Since the meeting was on television, he asked the
public to advise him if anyone has any knowledge as to who did the cutting, and we
could recoup the cost from them.
Motion made, seconded and unanimously approved to expend $300 from the Mashpee
Conservation Maintenance and Improvement Fund to remove the dead wood.
2. Violation at 41 Taurus Road. Bob reported that he has received a remediation plan
for this violation issued to the owner for building his pool over a portion of Conservation
land. Regarding the proposed planting plan, Michael said pin oak is inappropriate.
Instead, he recommended white oak and scarlet oak which should be at least 2"
caliper, and said for the white pine, 6 to 7 ft. is fine. He recommended that the number
of trees be at least doubled and that the proposed low bush blueberry be filled in with
various native viburnum plants. It was decided that the pool fence should serve as the
boundary with Conservation land. Bob said when trees have been taken down, we
usually require a replacement of three to one.
Motion made, seconded and unanimously approved to authorize the Conservation
Agent and Michael Talbot to review the site and recommend an enhanced revegetation
•
