Board of Health, Meeting, Minutes, April 281 1986 (Pace three)
of view, you know, I wouldn't think the water,. on the basis of the
water at. ummerwood Condominiums, "
Agent: Not all the buildings were found to have contaminants, "
Mr. Trask: "But I also know that in,in some areas that several wells
that in the case of the TcE was found to be three times higher than the
PA standards and in the ease of .the dichloroethylene it was 40 ppb,
where the EPA proposed standard is 70 "
cFB : " eh, proposed standard is even. "
Mr. Trask: "It ' s distressing, "
FB: "One of the things -that' s distressing to ane is this- question of
standards. It bothers me dnd I 'm not in the least encouraged simply by
knowing that everybody would like their water to read zero, because in
this day and age of land use and half u-se of land, there ' s virtually
an impossibility. we just haven 't been able to make it fine enough, I
don't think we' re ever going to find anything that register's zero, "
r. Trask: "Agreed"
cFB: "I would like to talk with County and see where their next step
is going to be. I know that we ' re not going to stop where we are, it' s
just a question of getting together with there, and see how far out we
expand this and which direction we expand, but I know we ' ll be covering
the whole perimeter as much as we can. The question of whether we can
go out and engage a private- laboratory .to come in, it' s beyond our ca-
pabilities, beyond our financial capabilities at this time . we will
be engaging, we have engaged, we 're just waiting for them Borne bac} ,
an engineering consultant, in order to look the area over and con-
tribute ghat they will -be required to, in endear for us to come to a
a greater assessment of the the parameters that reed to be looked at,
and, both physical and chemical . So, we ' re not standing still on it,
and I think the quickest way that we can go.
The State report, coming back, has taken about four times as long as
the county was, so I think that insofar as getting reports back and
whatnot we 're probably just as well staying with the County. "
Mr. Trask: "But you have any idea when? "
cFB: "I haven' t spoken with thea, I 'm- sure they will give us the
same amount of cooperation that they've given .us up to now. I know
that they' re as anxious to look around as we are, and, and, come up
with a better idea of our limits. "
Mr. Trask* "could I ask the Board a question. If you lived in cotuit
-corners, and, with what you know about all the numbers from summerwood,
and -the proposed direction of ground .water flow, would you, if you
li d at cotu-it corners, drink the water,. '
Agent: "I stop at the pump at the cemetery and drink that water all
the time, and I probably shouldn 't, but ilm 'still drinking it. I
have bee-n doing it now for eight gears. "
cFB: ' That' s a personal thing. "
Mr. Trask: "I guess what I 'm looking for, is the Board recommendations
. for those people living at cotuit Corners, keeping in mind the well
being of the people of Cotuit corners?" which - I expect you're charged
with!
cFB: "You' re asking me for ray personal opinion of myself and I 'm not
going to answer simply because for many years I was engaged in an in-
dustry which required that we use carbontetra.chloride, trichloroethylene
as cleaning agents, I used it as a matter of course and nothing has
happened, I know that there people working in our shop who had skin
trouble from it, an ecxzerna type of thing, that was their 'particular
sensitivity to it. At that time noone .knew what the hell it was
other than it bothered you; so, I really can 't answer that because
it hasn't affected rye even though I 've been connected with it. Insofar
as making recommendations to people in than area, I don' t know, common
sense tells me that if you are looking at something upstream of you
