BOARD of HEALTH MEETING SEPTEMBER 14, 1987 - Angelo' s/Purity Supreme
FULL BOARD PRESENT
ALSO PRESENT: slack MacDonald Mashpee Angelo' s Manager
Sean O'Brien counter Health Inspector
Bob Sturtevant Purity Supreme
Pat Desharnais Angelo' s
Jen Morris Angelo' s
Irene Farwell Angelo' s
Dawna Cardeiro Angelo' s
Tori Cummings Angelo' s
Melinda Gallant Field' s Point and others.
FB: Joe Reardon, Town Counsel expected momentarily. Suggest that we start o
him.
GC: Removing myself from meeting, record to show.
c FB; Looking for ars informal discussion to accomplish two things, 1 . That the corp,
can defend itself against charges of complaints by consumers* 2. That this Board
and the Corp can together rale Angelo' s a good place t shop i n. There seers to
be a reluctance on the part of people to put complaints in writing. We have had
some written complaints. I have an anonymous complaint in hand. 3/16/87, coy p1ain-
ing of hamburg.
Robert Grodberg RG : May I suggest, as General Counsel for Purity Supreme, as in my
letter to you , that the Boil is regulated be rules and reps describing how inspect-
ions are to be made and how violations are to be established. Anything short of
that is improper. It is also improper to deal with specific complaints, part-
t i cu l a r l y anonymous ones. Who knows what the motivations are. We have 2 super-
markets,
uper-
mar ets, we have in c s of .1,°300 Erni 1.1.ioi_4in4. a1es'.+W s!, f. 1-vddoommend t{ion .
We invite you t conduct your business in accordance with State Regulations.
We provide a fine product at a fair price in a sanitary condition.
c FB: 1 take ,your point. Would you prefer- to have formal charges brought against
Angelo' s Rather than meet and discuss charges? We have worked out charges in
the past w/o going the formal route.
RG: If as in Mr Fisher' s letter of March, you or EAM call Mr Sturtevant to discuss
complaint, that the way we think such matters should be handled.
EAM: That' s exactly what we have been doing.
RG: 1 think not.
Eam: And a follow-up letter has been nailed to Fisher or Sturtevant. I have copies.
Rather than making a full inspection following every complaint, I feel that on
occasion a phone call would suffice.
Joseph Fisher JF :It' s mfr desire to be here tonite as it was in March. To be able to
work with the Boil, to maintain the highest levels of sanitation in our store.
It is my intention to work very closely with the Board on any matter of con-
cern to the Burd. I sent the Board a letter on March 2 1987. I listed definite
things we were going to do.I indicated when I was down that I wanted to be per-
sonally involved. That if there was a problem, all you had to do was to call me.
I have to tell ,you that since that letter I have never had an attempted contact
by you, the Board or the Agent. or the clerk, Mr. Sturtevant has advised rye o
the contacts between hire and Mr McQuaid, of the issues which I classify as minor
housekeeping issues, and not major, critical sanitation issues. The process we
have been working under has been that Mr Sturtevant after receiving a call from
EAM has had to either go to the store from Billerica or call the store. We"v
had one full inspection since March, this was in June by County Inspector,
Sean O'Brien, he was asked to have a follow-up. He characterized his findings
as one of the cleanest stores on the Cape. The next thing that happened was an
article in the Messenger with serious allegations and some nit-picking issues.
It was after the article that Bob Sturtevant received a request for appearance
before the BOH. The damage had been done.Man r of our employees are Mashpee
residents and are proud of our store. Notwithstanding the problem lasting many
