MINUTES September 20 , 1990 I BOARD OF HEALTH
notified of the test results and why they were not provided
with the addendums to the draft study.
Mr, Greelish relayed that Health Agents did inspect the
site and tested one of the septic systems for failure. The
septic system tested was - found to be working properly.
Dr. Kerfoot commented intermittent failure of a septic
systems is a chronic problem in assessments f or the River
systems.
Mr. . reelish relayed the rats.o found in the 'study would
not be indicative of what is normally seem for septicfail-
ures. '
Dr. Kerfoot recommended, in regions that have been found
to have consistently high coliform contents, the Hoard of
Health place a tethered slow release dye pellet in the septic
systems, If the system is working properly the dye will be
absorbed in the soil, if the systema is in failure the dye,
with the use of a scanning flu rometer, can be seem in the
waters foran- extended period of time.
Mr. Evans explained to Dr. Kerfoot that the soils in
this area are such haat movement thru the soil is very fast,
(sandy soils prevail in this area) , and will leach out very
quickly.. Systems working properly may show up in the River.
Dr. Kerfoot suggested placing a concentration in a col-
umn of the sand to determine how much leaches out at the end.
Mr.. Evans questioned Mr, Kerfoot as to whether he has
performed, any fecal strep tests,
D , Kerfoot responded no.
r. Ferragamo requested Health Agents review the situa-
tion for comment at a later- meeting.
Mills stated for the record she was not the one who
released the numbers to the press, nor did she ask it to he
released. The fact of the matter is it is public informa-
tion.
Dr, Kerfoot stated people who did the sampling, up and
down the roadway systems, were ander specific guidance by me
to take samples at locations that we thought to be sig-
nificant locations of run-off.
