4
Mr. Harrington didn't feel he was going after anybody. They were going
after the board when they were writing letters when they hadn't even
given...
IVIS. Warden stated that they knew very well that Mr. Ball sat at a meeting
and said the Wampanoags. could get a variance just life everyone else.
Mr. Santos stated that that was exactly how it was quoted in the paper.
Ms. Warden continued by stating that they needed to be realistic here. He
said that more than once.
Mr. Harrington stated that Mr. Santos hadn't spoken to anybody yet
regarding what the options would be even, This isn't even said in stone.
IVIS. Warden stated that the letter was Mr, Marshall speaking. she felt that
they were treading on thin ice and it was going to get blown out of
proportion.
Mr. Santos reiterated that he felt kind of uncomfortable without the full
board there. It did need to be resolved. He was going to try to get a hold
of Mr. Marshall tomorrow. He was going to put all of the cards on the table
as to how they were trying to get this regulation through. He would listen
to what Mr. Marshall had to say because he wanted to understand where
he was coming from. He wanted to understand what Mr, Marshall means
by what they do, which he didn't have a clue. He would get a hold of Ms.
Grady and Mr. Ball and...
IVIS. Grady suggested that she thought that instead of Mr. Santos
personally speaking with IVIr* Marshall., Why didn't they invite Mr. Marshall
to the next meeting?
Mr. Santos felt that that might be a good idea,
IVIS. Grady continued that if they did that all of the board members could
hear the same responses and he could hear all of their opinions. she knew
that when she had a question in the school that was what she did. she
had, at the time, Dave Pocknett to provide a presentation to the advisory
board on the spiritual significance of tobacco in the Wampanoag culture.
He brought different samples and game different examples, He said
absolutely that it did not mean that a Wampanoag kid could light up a
Marlboro anywhere onschool property. That wras not hour it was viewed.
It gave her an appreciation of the culture. she thought that at the same
time she'd like to get across to them that it was not the board's intention
to impinge on the spiritual involvement of tobacco in their culture.
4
