Mr. Carson asked her if she could just wait a few more moments. He
wanted to discuss a couple more things and then switch over to A humet
Pond. He wanted to mentioned that back in July they did put in another
monitoring well around !Massasoit Avenue, They may have heard about a
third well that had been promised by thea. That was the well that they
put in and drove it to bedrock. Just to make sure that there wasn't
anything under-flowing the pond from these other plumes that they saw
out in the area. It was clean to bedrock. They did not see any
contaminants. They had another monitoring point on that side of the pond
as well as the point that serves to the lMashpee Water District because
they have water supplies further down gradient. That area is in a zone of
contribution perhaps. Two other things that he wanted to mention by
Johns Pond. One was the determination by the State Department of Public
Health in terms of safety and using the pond that has improved over the
last several years. That would be that Johns Pond was safe to use for all
recreational purposes either bathing, fishing and so on. The only advisory
that they have put out was for fish consumption related to mercury levels,
which was very commonplace on cape cod and Massachusetts, AFSCE
was committed to continue to provide funds to the board to do their own
independent analysis in some recreational areas.
Mr. Harrington had two more points on .Johns Pond before they moved on
to 1olshumet Pond, could he just discuss the TCE plume that was below
135 and also the other one for C310 and what was going with those two?
Mr. Carson responded that a few years ago they did a lot of on pond
drilling. Ashumet Pond had a barge out there for a couple of different
summer seasons. There were a lot of holes put into the bottom of the
pond for groundwater quality as they've come up with this depiction of
contaminants going under the pond. He pointed out the areas that were
believed to be discharged based on the poor water that was coming into
the pond at the moment, But, for the most part all of this contamination
underflows the pond, Mr. Harrington asked him about this particular finger
of the plume. It was discovered many years ago. They did have an
extraction well located on Hoophole toad, it had just been boosted from
he thought from 60 gallons per minute to 130 gallons per minute to try and
get more of the contamination out of the ground in that particular area.
They were evaluating that situation. There hasn't been a determination a
to whether or not that's solving the extra capture that they need out
there. They were collecting data on that. It seemed to be doing a pretty
goon job. The...historically in this finger were in the hundreds of parts per
billion. He did recall way back when they were first identifying the plume
area lever there were around 800 parts per billion. This whole southern
portion of the chemical spill 10 plume from the old Beau mark three miles
to the north. Some of the highest levels that they have seen of solvents
1
