Mr. Carson asked the board to look at the map in the Johns Pond,
Briarwood neighborhood, residential area. Downs in this particular area
was the storm drain fire plume or 5D5, It was in a couple of locations. It
used to be one contiguous plume stretching through this entire line. Back
in 1997 they installed tent extraction wells to pump contaminants from the
plume that had been operating around the clock for many years. Late last
year they started shunting some of these wells because they were
pumping a let of clean water, The plume had collapsed and degraded so
much that as of last week or the week before they were using one well
and they shut that clone since then. They were just monitoring. They were
not going to de-commission this well or pumping system for it. They would
keep it in the ground in case something changes during the monitoring
program and they could always get it back on line to address anything.
They didn't expect any surprises, hopefully, for this year, From the
extraction well system all the way down to Wheeler eler Road and some the
other streets near Highland Avenue. It was quite dean. Their data showed
that the area was at least drinking water level for solvents because that
was what was in this particular plume. It was predominantly TCE and
PCEs It was predominantly TCE that they see the most of. The plume has
collapsed, reproved, degraded and deluded over time. They've had a re-
circulation well, which is a different type of technology than pumping the
water out. It actually treats it while in the ground. That was located at
Wheeler Road and shut down two years ago. They had another one
located on the corner of Highland that they shut down earlier this year.
The reason is that if was pumping clean water or water that was meeting
the safe drinking water standards that really wasn't efficient to b
treating grater that was considered clean and able to drink. They will
continue to monitor area conditions change and they can arrays evaluate
an option but they don't expect that to happen. They do have an
extraction well located right here located on Hoophole Road and it will
continue. Last night at our plume cleanup team, which was their citizen
advisory team they briefed them on the current (tape ended ..;because
they knew from their testing they knew from their testing that they were
not going to have a 100% capture from that particular well. As you suck
water out of the ground you create zone of influence around it. But, you
can only go so far if the plume is a little bit wider than that. so some of it
was getting by and continues to discharge to the pond although they
haven't seen recently any detects through the testing that they have
done. That evaluation and determination needs to be made about any
further action for the stomp drain plurrne.
Nis. Warden stated that she had a question on the last map that was
presented impressed her with the plumes on the poral. could he tell her
about the phosphorus and treatment of Ashumet Pond?
1
