siding. Artificial siding should be avoided because it per alters the appearance o the
building, removing unique features and covering op features and damage.
Commission members questioned whether or not other alternatives to vinyl siding were considered and
inquired whether or not the applicant possessed documentation revealing the original siding that
existed on the church. Mr. Mills recalled that the building was constructed in the early 1930s. The
contractor noted that the original part of the building was covered in stucco, which Mr. Mills
remembers, and that the 2 story addition had been covered in the T 1-11. Everyone was in agreement
that the building was in need of Maintenance., but the Commission highly discouraged the use of vinyl
siding.
Commission ion menm ers discussed the availability of photo documentation of the Church. Mr. Picard
noted that the guidelines recommend replacement of what is currently present on the building or what
was originally on the building. The Chair stated that the application currently does not meet Historic
District standards. Commission members also discussed the request to add insulation, noting that it
would not fall under them-jurisdiction. lir. Fudala stated that -if the applicant plans to repair what
currently exists on the building, using the same materials and painting it the same color, historic
District Commission approval would be unnecessary and the applicant could be given a Certificate o
Non-Applicability.
The applicant withdrew their request for a Certificate of Appropriateness and the hearing was closed.
Mr. Robbins made a motion to accept the applicant's request to withdraw their application for
Certificate of Appropriateness. Motion seconded by Mr-.Picard. All voted unanimously.
The Commission then voted unanimously to approve a Certificate of Non-Applicability, based on
replacement, repair and painting using the same type of materials and colors as currently exist
on the building. The Certificate was signed by 4hairman Gurney and Mr. Mills.
Certificate of Aygroriateness
Applicant: Mashpee Town Hall
Location: 16 Great Neck Road North
Request: Use of ASK trim to.replace wood trim
plan, highlighting in orange the proposed work, was shared with the Commission. Catherine
Laurent reported that the Town of i ashpee Wished to replace the highlighted rotted trim(yellow pine),
which also extends around on the south side,, with AZEK or a similar product. Aluminum gutters will
be scraped and repainted to match their current appearance. The rotted trim was discovered during the
fall when work was being completed on the roof of the building- Three pieces of trim would be milled
in order to recreate the existing trim. Ms. Laurent distributed a sample of the proposed material.
.IVIS. Laurent noted that although the building is historic, additions have been constructed over the years
and have included vinyl windows, asphalt shingles and HardiPlank. The Chair noted that additions are
just as important as the original structure and it was added that the proposed work would occur on the
original building. The Chair quoted the Ma tepee Historic District Manual"s Design Guidelines for
Trim on page 6-16. Continued use of wood trim is strongly encouraged and synthetic materials are
discouraged. The Chair emphasized the 'importance of the building to the ffistofic District, and the
importance of replacing the damaged trim with wood even if the cost is higher. Ms. Laurent stated
that, although the initial costs to replace the trim with a synthetic material would be higher, the lower
2
