Discussion: A number of jet skiers from South Yarmouth were noted to be bringing their families and
spending the day at the boat launch. There are no facilities there. Numerous laws were being broken
including not wearing life jackets, skiing after 7 PSI, pulling water-skiers and tubers, and being generally
reckless. Mr. Ellis was notified and he suggested calling the AIA Environmental Police or epee
Police. He stated he can only enforce state laws, ars Mashpee is a Great fond, so water-skiing and jet
skiing are legal in the early morning. Joyce Mason stated she would talk with Perry Ellis about spreading
out personnel so that someone was available to cover the lake until : o each night. Distribution of the
boating rules by the gate attendant(Leisure Serv'ces)at the launch area was discussed. Jim Danks was
consulted and it was learned that the boating rules are on the Town web sight under waterways
Commission. It was noted that we night need to get the boating rules translated into Portuguese or +
Spanish, as there is a communication problem with some of the riders. Joyce volunteered to see about
getting a booklet of rules printed in time to be handed out for the holiday weekend.
Conclusions: Joyce will speak to Ferry Ellis and-also see that the boating rules are printed in time to hared
out this weekend.
.discussion: The Cape Cod Times reported a fish kill in wakeby Lake near where the Sandwich Total
--beach-and-Holly R ser ati n,m-e.et. lis.Nichols-repor ed 2-fish va.shed.up-on fuer shore-on Sunday,Jww
12, when the lake was particularly stirred up with Vand and boats. Mr. Daniels cut open a fish that washed
up on his shore and reported it filled with silt, both stomach and gills. The water at the time looked like
coffee with leaves floating in it. Mrs. Nichols could not see her feet standing in less than a foot of water.
Mrs. Nichols believes that the high water and erosion have let to this problem, which is being further
investigated. Mrs. Nichols.spoke with Ed Clark of DNT,but he was not aware of the fish loll as he is
mainly involved the androgynous fish. Phil Brady called back From the SE Regional office of Fish and
Wildlife. He reported that Steve Hurley, (508 -3406)who investigated, felt it was a natural event, Phil
stated that finding a stomach Bull of dirt is normal in a sucker as it feeds off worms from the bottom. Mrs.
Nichols also spoke with Glen Harrington of the Mashpe Board of Health who said it might have been a
bacteria related to spawning, and Dave Mason of the Sandwich Board of health who stated the quick rise
in temp lead to a low dissolved oxygen level which may have been a factor. No one felt it was related to
n insecticide or flumc from NINR.
Conclusions: The fish kill was felt to be a natural event, and no one seemed particularly concerned.
