[Akieindi topic 31 Lake Speed Limit
r i
Discussion: Barbara received.a letter from State Representative.teff Perry's office in response to our
request to lover the speed I nit on Ma'shpee&Wakeby Lakes from 45—30 mph. Rep. Perry mentioned
that currently regulations are promulgated through the Department of Environmental Profeetion not
through Massachusetts general Laws. He stated that we could pursue to reduce the speed limit through
g
the local town by-law process. Mike Richardson offered to take the letter to Town Counsel Pat Costello
to,see if it is possible to reduce the speed on a Great Pond through a Town bylaw. ill Ta forn r
o de d if
we could get information on how other states handle this. Mr. Richardson spoke about the surveillance
system used in lois area to catch speeders, and wondered if this could be used by the lake to catch violators
of boating laves.
Conclusions: We need to gather more information n-how to proceed to lover the speed li.t on Mashpee
Wakeby Pond from 45 to 30 mph,
(Agenda topic 41 Bbating Compliance
Discussion: Barbara summarized the re rt received from Lt. Read regarding the b-oating activity on the
Lake the last 3 weekends of the season. The final 2 weekends,, a larger boat marked with a Mashpee
Police sign and a blue flashing light was used. The majority of stops were for safe eqw*pment
inspections. On August 21/22,there was I stop and 1 assist for a disabled boat. On August 28/29, dere
were 12 stops and 5 radar readings on boats on each lake, and on Sept 5 ,there were 8 stops and 5 radar
readings from Wakeby boats. Barbara mentioned haat radar speeds,.without knowing where they were
taken, and without knowing other boating activity at the scene, were not very helpful, except to know that
readings could be taken. It appears that just one citation was written this summer. Members felt more
citations should be written to help with compliance to the boating laws.
Conclusions: Stops are made for inspections, but not enough citations are being written for violations.
[Agenda topic ]
Discussion:
Conclusions:
The meeting was adjoumed at 8:40 P.M.
Respectfully submitted,
Barbara B. Nichols
