Gary Eynatian inquired as to the library consultant ' s
role/input on the project. Ms. Powers provided information from
Jay K. Lucker, Library Consultant, dated October 14, 1999,
numbered 1 through 12 . She noted he would work from the firmvs
office inputting the design and organizational work. The process
would be coordinated among the library consultant, library
director, and the architects.
Ernest Cole asked if Ms. Powers was of the opinion that a
library consultant would be required for the Mashpee Library.
Ms. Powers response was that she feels it is extremely important
in the master planning, phase growth process . She stated it
would prove to be in the best interest and benefit of the Town to
hire a library consultant for this project.
Mr. Johnson contributed to the discussion by stating the
importance of a library consultant to project the long range
needs, as well as technology planning.
Mr. Whritenour inquired as to the type of work the firm has
been involved with being renovation/restoration vs. new
construction, especially with regard to public facilities. Ms.
Powers answered forty percent of the firm' s work is public, the
rest being private, the work consisting of interior design and
interior"renovations in both circumstances. She stated the firm
has been involved in a fair share of major urban public municipal
reconstruction projects, and that they have demonstrated their
expertise in life safety and code issues, as well as development
planning for both public and private markets . She also stated
her firm has had experience in working with the preservation of
historic buildings.
Grace Talmage asked Ms. Powers how she would define the
Mashpee project . Ms . Powers replied she envisions a combination
project so that the Town could realize some savings by retaining
the existing building in addition to expanding the structure.
There was some general discussion with Mr. Johnson regarding
building/construction possibilities. There was also some
explanation as to the centers of Town; the cultural and historic
site and the commercial commerce site. Mr. Whritenour made it
clear that the library would remain on its present site.
Gary Eynatian suggested the existing building not be
demolished, but rather that it be modified by additional
constructions . He also inquired as to the eventual possibilities
of constructing a second story onto the building as the second
phase of the project while keeping the library operational .
Ms. Powers stated this could be accomplished as a part of
the phased envelopment plan.
-4-
