Gate #2-Specifics, organization of conceptual design,
determine a preliminary budget and provide all necessary studies.
Consider moving issues as opposed to phasing while in operation.
Gate #3-Provide a detailed schematic design. Obtain
approval from Town of library funding. Provide design
development contract documents.
Ms. Powers informed the Committee that she and Paul Johnson
are a small hands-on office and that they are very much involved.
She then described the other members of her staff, explaining the
firm is a studio shop and that they do their own work, by choice.
At this point, Mr. Whritenour asked Ms. Powers to speak
about some of the process issues.
Ms . Powers made references to the Pembroke Town Hall
project, pointing out certain code violations and the solutions
they provided thereto. She provided visual department design
diagrams, indicating application and space. She made references
to industry and professional standards which must be met in every
project, part of which is the architects ability to develop the
correct product for the client.
Ms. Powers also made references to a project in the Town of
Weston, a new construction, situated within the Historic District
with many site planning requirements and special conditions. She
then pointed out the similarities of these two projects with that
of the Mashpee project.
Ms. Powers said she would provide physical 3-D models as
well as computer models.
At this point, Mr. Whritenour opened the interview process
to Committee Members for questions.
Helene DeFoe commented on how thorough Ms. Powers'
presentation was. They discussed in general the issues of
growth/space, and increased staffing and security, with Ms.
DeFoe stating she would very much like to maintain the atmosphere
of friendliness and that of a neighborhood library. Ms. Powers
suggested this concern be incorporated into the mission of this
project.
Grace Talmage noted that the Library Director would do an
excellent job of integrating library activities with the citizens
of the Town. She also commented on the fact that continued
growth would be necessary, build-out space. To which Ms. Powers
agreed it would be wise to prepare and agree upon a phased growth
plan. She provided' a sketch diagram depicting the existing
building, the proposed common, proposed growth potentials and
gardening areas, as well as the potential for a second story
expansion. -3-
