On the second floor, the reference desk is at the top of the stairs with the reference area to the
left. The reading area is to the right. stacks are located to the back. The young adult area i
located to the back of the floor, removed from the adult area. A Native American display area is
included on the second floor. An alternative location for the stairs would be back by the
Children's area, close to the elevator entry on the second floor.
COMMENTS FROM THE COMMITTEE
Bridget Bontrager. Bridget's library experience and.e pertise is in the area of young adults.
She offered the following comments. The current plan calls for just one library desk on the
second floor. Problem areas such as the young adult area and the computer area on the second
floor will need more than one staff`person to supervise. Isolating the young adults to the back of
the floor would result in more noise with no supervision. Ample display area for the young
adults reeds to be included in the plan. she recommended no coffee tables on the second floor,
as young adults tend to park their backpacks around, and are stolen. Bridget felt strongly that
young adults should not be isolated from the rest of the library. Rather, they should be more
closely integrated with the rest of the library.
Janet Burke. As the Children's Librarlan, Janet's concerns fall into the toddler and children's
areas of the library. She asked abet the capacity of the storybook room} stating that she ideally
should have room for 40, and recommended tiered seating for the tots. Janet recommended the i
craft room be half carpeted and half linoleum. she felt that both the toddler area and the easy i
reader area looked larger than necessary, and that the location of the toddler area should be
located nearer to the storybook room.
Sheldon Gilbert. With regard t.o a reference room and a computer area, Sheldon asked whether
we should move more toward a computer reference area as opposed to a staffed reference i
librarian. Mr. Roberts commented that the trend is definitely toward computer training for library
users. Regarding the Indian collection, Sheldon recommended planning for space for a display.
Bonnie Barrett. Bonnie expressed the feeling that the Wampan ag community needs to be
asked to advise the LBC as to their wishes regarding the display area in the new library. she felt
that it should be an integral part of the library and should be located on the first floor.
Tom ONeill. Tori world like to see the staircase moved to the back of the first floor, which
would open Grp the first floor entryway area. He also suggested moving the mechanical room to
_ the back of the floor, to a-less obvious location. Mr. Roberts reminded the group that two means
of egress are required from the mechanical room. Torn suggested a vaulted cathedral ceiling
over the meeting room. Ton's feeling about the young adult area was that they should have their
own space, their own domain. It should be separate, but not entirely closed in and isolated.
Dare Burton. Dave suggested the reed to include plans for a 150 to 175 sq.ft. catering kitchen
area close to the meeting room.
Stere CooklJane Dolan. Steve reported on the technical aspects of incorporating energy
conservation into the design of the new library building. He stated that it will add about 10%to
the cost of the construction of the building, and a LEER consultant would need to be hired for a
fee.'Additional costs would also be added to the architect's fee. Steve has comprised a checklist
of 26 items that he feels should allow the LBC to easily obtain minimal level LEER requirements.
The energy conservation savings would be realized five years down the road. The first round of
design drafts will not include LEER considerations. Steve also suggested that the new building
be placed closer to .fobs Fishing Road in order to allow future expansion out to the right of the
library. Mr. R oberts' comment on the energy con servartion issue was that the state of NIA already .
has very stringent energy efficient requirements for new building construction.
