TOWNOF AS E
LIBRARY BUILDING COMMITTEE
Minutes of the Meeting of Tuesday, March 29, 2005
Committee Attendees: Also Attending:
Sheldon Gilbert Helene DeFoe, Library Director
Bonnie Barrett John Rent, Mashpe Commons
Maureen Founds
Steve Cook
Jame Dolan
Diana Lannon
Dave Burton
Ed DeFoe
Tori O'Neill
Chairman Sheldon Gilbert called the meeting to order at 7:15 PM.
REVIEW of MINUTES
Minutes from the LBC meeting held on 3/01/05 were unanimously approved by the Committee.
REPORTS.
Temporary Locations for Library During Construction.
1) Mashpee school Buildings. Aside from possible re'qulrements for security, we do not
ar-ticipate costs for. school space. It would also be advantageous to be away from the new
construction site, because of noise and safety concerns. Library parking is not a problem from
the school's point of view.
2) IIllashpee Commons. John Renz stated that he is still hoping for space to free up at the
Commons area, if the timing is right. Stores that may be about to vacate must give sic months'
notice. The costs involved here to the library would be taxes and utility bills.
3)Temporary "frailer Backup. Jame Dolan will proceed with the firm, Scottsrnan, regarding cost
and availability. Scottsman does not provide septic tanks for their trailers. However, the firm of
BausHouse can provide tanks which would ft underneath one of the trailers. Depending on the
size of the tank, the cost for Bau House service would be$113-to$227 per month, which would
include delivery, setup and pumping. The current estimate for these services is approximately
$40,0 00 for a one year period. A Request t for Proposals would be required to comply with state
procurement procedures.
Geothennal Heating — Stege Cook. Steve reported on information from two geothermal
companies in New Hampshire. One has done work on the Haverhill library in 1996, and the other
company worked on the new library in North Adams. There are two types of systems; one is
DX reffigerant system, the other a water based system. Either system can supply radiant heat or
forced hot air. The DSC system has a higher up-front cost but lower operating costs. Thewater-
based system has a lower up-front cost but higher operating costs. Both systems are guaranteed
for 25 to 30 years. The DX system uses copper piping which might require installation of sleeving
around the piping to maintain pH.balance in the soil. DX system operating costs are estimated at
25 cents per square foot or $6,000 per year. The waiter based system is estimated to be
approximately oo per year.
The I la hpee Police Station, just under 21000 square feet, had costs of$1.96 per square ft. for
electricity and heat in 2004, compared to geothermal costs which would be approximately ately o
cents per sq. ft. Costs for electrical services would be additional.
1
4_ -
