r
TOWN OFMASHPEE
LIBRARY BCOMMITTEE
4
Minutes of the Meeting of Thursday, April 28, 2005
Committee Attendees: AAso-Atterndiing: Absent:
Sheldon Gilbert Helene DeFpe, Library Director Steve Cook
Ed DeFoe John Rent, Mashpee Commons Diana Lannon
Jane Dolan Melinda Gallant, Fundraising consultant Bonaire Barrett
N Maureen Founds Nancy Soderberg, Friends of the Library
` Tom O'Neill
Dave Burton
Chairman Sheldon Gilbert called the meeting to order at 7:08 PM.
REVIEW of THE MINUTES
Minutes from the meeting held on 3/29/05 were unanimously approved by the Committee.
REPORT FROM HELEHE DeFOE
` Helene reported on a meeting she had at the beginning of April with Tori Strohmeyer, architect
from the l lBLD who is reviewing our grant application. Grant applicants are divided into groups,
` with an architect assigned to each group, to review the plans, and visit the sites. Mr. str hmeyer
cane to the library, took a look at the building, and walled around the grounds, so that he could
see what our situation is here. He looked at the plans and was very interested in whether we had
} made changes in the plans, and if so, was the impetus for the changes from the building
committee, or was it the architect driving thein. Helene showed him various versions of the plans,
pointing out changes made by the corwnmitee for operational reasons. He could clearly see that
the library committee and the program were driving the design, not the architect telling us what
we would need. This is a definite plus because the review committee wants to feel that the library
building committee is the one in charge of ghat is inside, and not the architect. Mr. Strohmeyer
was very complimentary with his comments. He had not been down here before, and thought we
had a great location, and lilted the layout. Fart of Mr. Strohmeyer's task is to explain to the non-
architects on the review committee what was in our minds and why we did certain things. He acts
as an interpreter to the other members of the review corn miffee who are library people such as
directors, trustees and engineers who have been involved in building programs. His site visit -
{ allows hire to see what we are working with so that he can then report to the review committee
that the conditions presented in our grant application are really the conditions that exist. Helene
felt that the meeting went well, and that the feedback from M r. Stroh nneyer was very positive.
FUNDRAISING SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS
avid Burton. Dave introduced Melinda Gallant, the fundraising consultant hired by the Beard of
the Friends of the Library. Melinda gave a brief review of what has been done to date and what
she hopes to accomplish in the corning weeks. Melinda prefaced her remarks by stating that she
was very happy to be working for the Mashpee Library. Melinda is meeting tomorrow with a
woman who has agreed to do graphic pro bond work for materials for us. she is a local designer
. who supports the library and what we are trying to do. Through the months of May and dune,
5 Melinda will be putting together an awareness schedule of total money needs, and the money
needed to go forward. She plans to address people in the community who don't understand why
'
we Tweed a new library. There are a lot of business people in Mashpee she has talked to,
members of the Chamber of Commerce that say'Who needs a new library?" This attitude is
something g that needs to be addressed immediately. Melinda i meeting the first part of is with
1 " Janice Wolford, End with other area media people to talk about the plans for a new library, where
r
we are gingt and why. she plans to do a local surrey of businesses to determine their
41
