Page 4
traffic violations done through overtime. He asked how much it
would cost to reinstate the program? Chief Frye explained that one
year they had a grant, but SP4s could be used for this purpose
also. Ms. Caffyn mentioned that certain associations are looking
to hire policemen for certain functions, but there aren't enough
regular officers in the department working throughout the summer.
Chief Frye also mentioned that he would like to utilize SPOs for
patrolling beaches and traffic enforcement and also community
policing. Chief Frye, Ms. Greelish and Mr. Whritenour agreed to
talk about the figures at a later day, so that the meeting could
continue. There was a discrepancy of figures between the Selectmen
and the Finance Committee.
LEISURE SERVICES
Gus Frederick was at the meeting on behalf of Leisure Services. He
is the new director. Mr. Whritenour explained that the Selectmen
were recommending that the Program Supervisor's hours be 40 rather
than 20 , a full time administrative secretary and one part time
secretary be scheduled. This makes three full time employees and
one part time employee for the department. Mr. Frederick explained
that right now the school is utilized only two nights per week for
classes. He would like to utilize the school for four nights, so
that they are not risking losing the use of the school . The
Program Supervisor is responsible for running the programs,
scheduling them, collecting fees and hiring instructors. He felt
that the more the school can be utilized, the better the programs
will be. Ms. Sullivan asked whether he felt programs could be
created to keep teenagers busy on the weekends? Would Dr. DeMoura
possibly let the school be utilized then? Mr. Frederick was asked
what his responsibilities included? He answered that he was
working on Project 2000 (a youth teen program) , a youth teen
center, lifeguards, human services, youth employment, etc. He is
trying to develop a softball league. Ms. Greelish stated that if
the finances could be found, she would be willing to extend the
program supervisor's hours to 40 from 20, but that she preferred
this year that the department get stabilized. She did not feel
that the finances were there.
The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 7, 1993 at 7:00
PM. The Finance Committee will be meeting with the Board of
Selectmen to finalize their recommendations. The meeting adjourned
at 10:45 PM. Minutes Submitted by Jean M. Mooney, Recording
Secretary.
