t
MA HPEE SCHOOL COMMITTEE—1 REGULAR MEETING—JANUARY 3, 2001 PAGE 2
involvement in school. Mr. Hunt said a survey will be distributed to the students
for their input on the above.
At this point in the meeting, Mfrs. Mills asked to have 8.7, "Athletics
Presentation — Pop Warner" make their presentation regarding reaching a
compromise in using high school students for their program. In his memo, high
school principal Ira Brown stated:
I. "Mashpee High School will have two football teams for Fall, 2001.
These two teams will consist ofa varsity for grades 10, 11 and 12 and
Freshmen turn for grade 9. Any student who is in grades 7 who
weighs more than 145 will play for the Freshmen tam. Wben the
MHS Freshmen play the two teams in our league with a
Freshmen/Sophomore tam, thea our sophomores will play in these
games."' N -
. "The 1 lashpee Pop Warner Football Pr rare will discontinue it's
Team for players 145 pounds or more. They will beep their B Team.
The High School Program will send all seventh and eighth grade
players weighing less than 145 pounds to the Pop Warner Program.
. "There will be a Freshmen Cheerleading Squad for those girls who
cheer for the Pop Warner A Tear."
There was discussion of allowing more physically capable seventh and eighth
grade players to play on the freshmen team. This has caused concern among
Pop Warner officials who feel that allowing jun ior high-level students to play on
the high school team could weaken its program. Pop Warner President Karl
McClintock said students age 1 I to 14 weighing 98 to 145 pounds as well as
students 15 years old weighing 95 to 125 pounds are all eligible to play on the
Pop Warner A team. Hier, these are the students than may play on a high
school freshmen team if the school allows certain seventh and eighth grade
students to play.
On the other hand, school officials have concern that a Pop Varner team might
lure students away from the high school's football program. Athletic Director
Michael Horne said there are some seventh and eighth graders who are
ineligible to play for Pop Warner because they exceed the weight limits and with
no high school team to play on,are left out playing football.
It was noted that although a freshmen team would give certain eligible seventh
and eighth graders a chance to play, Mrs. Mills said that allowing junior high
students to play on a high school team conflicts with plans to segregate the two
levels. High School football coach Bill Iulis stated that allowing eligible junior
high students play on a low-level high school team would be a good way t
build up the high school's football program.
School officials will meet again to discuss the eligibility guidelines for the high
school teams before the Pop Varner registration period in late February or early
March.
