New Business
Mrs. Grader reviewed proposed changes to policy GCHA. A proposed new
section would be added to read as follows:
Qualification nd Certification of Substitute Teachers and Ire-Horne Tutors
All long-term substitute teachers must possess a minimum of a bachelor's degree. As a
minimum standard, this requires that all long-terin substitute teachers (defined as
position assignment expected to last longer than two consecutive creeks) working in the
district possess an undergraduate degree from an accredited degree-granting institution.
While it is not a requirement, it is preferred that the degree earned relates specifically to
the subject matter being taught. It is also desirable, though not required, that the degree
be from a school of education and/or that the candidate has received instruction in, or has
prior experience in, an educational setting. Candidates for long-terra and substitute
teaching positions must provide a transcript showing course work completed, grades
received, and degree s attained, as well as be able to pass appropriate background and
health examinations, prior to being employed by the district.
The Superintendent of Schools has the authority to amend these rules for specific
situations, following consultation and concurrence by the School Committee.
i
This was the first read; a vote will be taken at the next meeting.
There was also discussion of high horrors, and the requirement for arid-terra grades to be
included. Mrs. St. Cir stated that this policy was in the handbook. There was discussion
that the Committee did not interpret the information in this manner. it was decided to
schedule further discussion on this.
XIV.
