He will not
know that until it is close to the meeting. Chief Baker stated that he has$35,000 in vacation
buy-back. He estimates right now that there is probably$5,000 that will be used;however,he
doesn't know at this time.
Chief Baker noted that in the C.LP.this year, here is a request for an infra-red vision
camera. This is a$20,000 piece of equipment that enables Fire fighters to see based on infra-
red heat and can see through smoke and, fog. It is a hand-held unit which can be passed from
one fire fighter to the next when they leave the building. He said it allows you to search a
room from standing at the door, even in pitch black smoke. He stated that he is asking for
one camera for this year. He commented that he is working heavy on a donation for a second
one because here really should be one on each engine.
Chief Baker reviewed the communication needs of the Fire Department. Chief Baker stated
that his goal is to have every fire fighter on the fire ground with a radio in their hand, some
back-up equipment and some spares. Chief Baker said he has$30,000 in the C.I.F.budget
for the communication needs.
Chief Baker reviewed the Fire.Department's budget numbers, Chief Baker stated that the
Fire Department budget submitted contained a spreadsheet error for lief. #2202 Fire Salary
Wage. They failed to include the salary-for one fire fighter, so instead of the original amount
requested for Salary&wage of$1,556,649,the figure needs to Bread$1,589,681. Chief Baker
stated that Bob whritenour-is looking for ways to save money and so they-looked at-wheTe it
is costing money and the big expense is Recall—calling fire fighters back. With the multiple
calls occurring, it is increasing. He said-they-loop at what-would happen if they-brought
each shift up in strength. He said that, right now, they ran a four-person minimum. He said
they calculated the numbers on briningtheir-shift-minimum up-to-five and gotfive out of
leaving 7 people assigned 24 hours(right now,they have 6 assigned for 24 Hours,with the
two people worldng days). If they hire two people, their request will be$1,555,00, o it
actually is$30,000 less to add two new fully-paid positions to the Fire Department. Benefits
would-cost another 10,000-for both,so the savings would be$201,000. Chief Baker stated
that the savings is b=use this affects their overtime directly. What Bob is recommending i
adding the two positions in their-budget;thereby,creating a five person minimum, and submit
an Article just for benefits for the positions.
Chief Baker noted that if the budget went through with the two positions-taken out, he would
really be short because besides being short the position money, he would be short the savings
of$3'0, 00.
Mr.Lamin questioned Chief Baker what theC.I.P. approved on the Capital. Chief Baker
stated that the C.I.P. approved$53,000--$20,000 for the infra.-red camera and$33,000 for
the communications.
Chief Baker noted that the Fire Station Renovation this year would cost no money because the
bond is approved to borrow, start the work, and pay the first payment the next fiscal year.
Mr. Golub questioned,Chief Baker how the addi
