Finance Committee/February 2000
He added that he will have Sheldon do a report fDr the Finance Committee on the numbers for
self funding. 1
QUESTIONS BY DANCE Cil B MIEWFRJEFF AR&OLD:
i
Chief Baker answered the following questions, which were sent to hien by Finance Committee
member Jeff Arnold.
Overtime uct tion in Sslary/Wage
Chief Baker discussed the Vacation Buy/Back,which mems the Firefighters can buy back
their vacation. He noted that this is a liability which he carries. He noted.that it is difficult to
predict what this amount should be. He said that two gears ago,one person bought back some
tie and last year, two bought back some time. He stated that he has used the extra to cover
their influx.
Chief Baker commented that for this year, they are almost to what they budgeted for in recall.
The extra in vacation burr-back'is goimg to cover that.
He noted that they are decreasing the amount%n the budget for vacation buy-back because
people have not been taking it in the post.
Fire Fighters Salaries are contractual obligations for a 42-hour work week including benefits.
There is no overtime in Firefighters salaries.
Chief Baker noted that the huge fluctuation in budget requests for Overtime gages is due to a
typographical error in the budget request of FY200 —the$7,000 amount. They asked for too
little—there should have been more on that line.
Overtime wages is covering for vacation time, sick time, and personal time. He stated that
they run a 7 person assigned,5 person mmiimum shift. So,if there are two people on
vacation and a third person calls in sick, they have to hire overtime for the 24 hours to keep a
person on-duty shiff.
Rill wages is directly tied to when the truck goes out and people have to cone back. Remll
keeps 4 people in the station—5 people on-duty,3 go out on the ambulance, bring 2 people
back to keep 4 people in the station. Chief Baker noted that they always try to keep
minimum of 4 people in the station.
Chief Baker noted that under the contrail, the full-time Firefighters get est refusal for
overtime. If they can't get any fufl-time Firefighters,he then goes to the part-time call
people.
TERining
Chief Baker noted that Training is overtime. It is separated out from vacation time, sick
time,and personal time.
Chief Baker infonned the Finance Committee that EMT"s have a two-year recertification
period. when this is broken in halt it is 26 hours annually for their Mate License.
