y
} BA C K G
The Mashpee Fire station is presently being used as both the administrative and
operational headquarters for the Ma hpee Fire and fescue Department. The facility
consists of an original 1979 structure. Although the building has received luted
maintenance, the building has received no major renovations and requires an update
of most systems to meet the current needs of the Town.
Additionally, the Town of Ma hpee 'is the fastest growing community in the
Commonwealth, with year--round population growth during the 1980s of 113%
from 3,700 in 1980 to 7,884 in 1990. Ma hpee was second in the Mate in the
issuance of single-family home building permits, including townhouse
condominiums, during the same period with 3,945 pern-iits issued. Neighboring
Barnstable led the Mate with 5,616 with the other adjacent Towns of Falmouth,
which ranked third with 3,574 permits and Sandwich, which ranked fifth with
2,703 perrm'ts, making the upper-Cape one of the fastest growing areas in the East.
There are now approximately 7,400 housing units in I l shpee, of which
approximately 3,550 are occupied gear-round, and growth has continued in the
1990s.
s a result of this rapid growth the Fire Department has increased in size during this
period, from 13 full time employees to 27, creating a situation where the current
Fire Station is cramped and overcrowded. In addition to conducting building
renovations, the Fire Department needs an analysis of space needs and a program to
use space to ret our present and future reeds. In this regard it will be necessary to
determine if ars addition to the current building will be required to meet our space
needs.
2
