Mashpec: Public Library GREAT NECK ROAD MASHPEE, MASS. 02649 • Annual Report 1979 To the Honorable Board of Selectmen and the Citizens of the Town of Mashpee: In 1979 the grav,th of the Mashpee Public Library in the areas of ( materials circulation, information referrals, and the use of library ( facilities by community groups increased sharply. 7,327 books, periodicals, and films were circulated. An increase of 105 percent over 1978 . When coupled with systematic acquisitions, donations from Friends of the Library, the New Seabury Women' s Club, the Mashpee Garden Club, and individual residents increased library holdings to 6495 volumes and 29 magazine subscriptions. Monetary donations also purchased a magnifying lens for the visually handicapped, additional standard reference works, chairs, tables, lamps, and bookmarks. Weekly and monthly periodicals are now available for use at home or in the library. Service to the homebound continues, as does expanded service for the. visually handicapped. Another popular addition to library service is the paperback book exchange which enables readers to select from a variety of old and new titles thus j stretching entertainment budgets for those who enjoy reading. A nformation and survey booth at a local supermarket , and the Ali rary' s display at Mashpee' s Salute To Spring program spurred a significant increase in the_.enrollment of library card= holders. . At their annualmeetinglast May, the Public Relations committee of . the Massachusetts Library Association presented .a first prize award for special creativity to the library for the Bosley Bookworm pro- motion. Library facilities were used during . the year for- puppet shows, twice = weekly morningclassesfor preschoolers;__a summertime story hour.-.-- conducted ourconducted by Mrs. -Peg Geary, A Brownie poster con-�est;- a sunflower..- contest sponsored by the 4 H Club, topical monthly displays arranged: by library patrons and directed by Mrs. CharlotteSwenson, and a holiday tree provided and decorated by the Girl Scouts and Brownies. . Films borrowed through EMRLS interloan were used-by-the .Senior--Citizens- Center.- The after hours book drop has helped-minimize overdue--boolucharges: Summer residents availed themselves of library privileges. as did vacationing students fulfilling summer -reading requirements. Climate control for materials preservation will be aided by the newly- installed air conditioning unit and a dehumidifier. The purchase of an electric typewriter, additional catalog files, and bookshelves Mbe used for expansion to the lower level. While Mashpee Public ary is one of the smallest on Cape Cod, the enlargement of the print materials collection, the anticipated arrival of audio visual resources, and programs geared to facility use should insure continuation of the library' s rapid growth to meet community needs.
