Mashpec Public Library
GREAT NECK ROAD
MASHPEE. MASS. 02649
i
REPORT OF THE MASHPEE PUBLIC LIBRARY
1980
To The Honorable Board of Selectmen and the Citizens of the
Town of Mashpee:
I
Use of library facilities increased significantly in 1980,
and once again Mashpee Library augmented its services to meet
requests of library patrons. Circulation of reading materials
totaled 10,083.
Library holdings now number 7231 volumes with book donations
and memorial gifts adding substantially to previously budgeted
materiel purchases. Additional books were obtained to broaden
the young people' s collection, and to supply titles listed as
required reading for area high school and college students.
Books were also borrowed through EMRLS interloan and from the
Yarmouthport book depository to meet the demand for specific
• works.
Unprecedented library usage by summer residents necessitated
additional personnel. The demand for services could not have
been met without many hours of volunteer work provided by the
Friends of the Mashpee Library who staffed the circulation
desk, and shelved books on Mondays and Saturdays.
Although library space is very limited, story hours were held
for the Mashpee Child Development Club preschoolers, the Mimsy
puppets entertained an enthusiastic audience, and an arts and
crafts program, directed by the Mashpee Recreation Department,
met during the summer on the lower level.
The new audio-visual department has been popular with adults
and children. Tapes and recordings are now circulating, and
additional titles are added to the collection each month.
Large print books and magazines are available for the visually
impaired, and their circulation has increased. Additions to
this section are made periodically. While homebound delivery
of materials is still available, few patrons have requested the
service.
In cooperation with the Mashpee Police Department, an electric
• engraver for personal property identification can be borrowed
from the library.
New at the library is a circulation desk. This desk had seen
75 years of service in Woburn and now provides a much needed
work area to facilitate materials circulation on the main level.
We are indebted to the Woburn Library for their generous gift.
