Library Trustees
10/01
Page Three
Iv PRESENTATION/DISCUSSION WITH MASHPEE COMMONS
Mr. Chase explained that initially when Iashpee Commons was
planned , they had wanted it not to just be a shopping center ,
but they felt the more civic uses . in addition to commercial
uses that were here.- the buildings that belong to the commun-
ity should have prominent sites ,, with the use' of timeless
i architecture . There. were a. couple of other civic buildings
that they were fortunate enough to be planning . One is the
.new post office. -The other -building is the Children ' s .
Museum. Couldn ' t it be nice if they were adjacent to where
th.e' library project i , since they would probably be back
and forth there .
Mr. Chase identified on a reap , and described the two sites
that they wanted to offer the library for their consideration .
It was explai.n.ed that those sites were locations that they had
discussed should be for civic use.
Carlo explained that if the new Library building should be
funded in. the first batch., they would be at the pint where
decisions would have to be made fairly quickly. They would
be talking construction within the next year, if not sooner.
If all went ahead !, and we agreed we wanted to move, he asked
Buff Chase if they would be able to help us meet the time-frame
when construction would begin
Mr . Chase stated that he would think it would be tight , but
possible . We are going to want to be very involved in what that
building looks like., Potentially, from an architectural stand-
point , it should move to- a very traditional New England style
library. We are of the belief that that is a less expensive
building to build . Building a design that could take an ad-
dition in twenty years would be a smart thing to do .
Mr . Chase explained that if the present site is reused. as a
civic site , it would have to redesigned so that it comes up
to the sheet , that it preferably has extended hours that it
would be open, so- that it will be part of the -community .
Fields Point had discussed the possibility of a Grange Hall ,
that becomes a meeting hall , a c mmunity center .
Discussion of pros and cons of present site as compared to the
alternative two potentia. sites .
Discussion . of comparison relative to potential parking spaces .
Discussion of outside space, "courtyard" that could be utilized
in the summertime for various programs - would that be available
in the alternative sites?
