i
Library .Trustees
4/10/01.
Page Two
The Building Committee was appointed approximately a year and a
half ago . A design feasibility study was awarded by the Town to
an architectural firm, Powers & Company, out of Boston . Ms . Darlene
Powers and her staff worked very hard for the last sixteen months
putting together essentially, using the program. The size of the
building was determined by population.. Clearly, the present bu ld -
bug. .s insufficient for the Town' s present needs .
As part of the building and - feasibility study , we planned to add
on to this 'build n.g . It was determined that we cannot-;- , in fact ,,
do that since building codes have changed . This particular build-
ing was not designed to take a second floor . There is no basement .
It did not allow for future expansion .
David explained that what he hoped to accomplish this evening was to
perhaps clarify some of the misconceptions . Fields Point , Mashpee
Commons have offered really from the beginning to be part of the
process - not designing the building , and not having undue control
over that , We would graciously - accept any assistance both monetarily
and on an advisory capacity , We. the Trustees and the 'Iowa would
like the overall decisions and designs to be those of the people of
the town. They understood that .
The proposed design, the interior of the building , the program i
pretty much what we are going to meed # The final design by no means ,
has been solidified . The - building committee had the option of dis
cussing a few alternative sites besides our present location.
a hpee Commons who owns most of the property here , , did not have sites
available at that time .
David wanted to thank Grace Talmage and her group o-f people who put
together " Mashpee Library Growth Pattern 1928-2001" , a hand-out to
the meeting encouraging support for the Article 19 on May 7th.
III A period of 0 & A from the attendees were answered by Helene
DeF e ,
Iv PRESENTATION/DISCUSSION WITH IAS PEECOMMONS :
David explained that we had .with us Buff Chase, Randall Imai ,
and Douglas Storrs . What we had -here was a combined meeting of
our Board of Trustees our Building Committee , - and a number of
members of th.e' Friends of the -Library,
Mr. Buff Chase introduced himself and explained that there might
be some other advantages to having an alternative location . One
of those might be that you coup construct the library in the
other location, and operate this library right until the day that
you moved .
