llashpee Public Library
P_o. Box 657
Mashpee, Ma 02649
Circulation for.July and August totaled 28,507 items. These transactions were processed
on the old IRA software. Since then, the library has circulated 39,378 items on the
Millennium system. Combined circulation for the two systems for the first half ofthe
fiscal year totals 67,885 items. Circulation for the same period last year was 62,359
items; a difference erence of 9% more than last year. I have pr'nted out a report of items
circulated by the 1 lashpee Library from September through December 2002, broken
down by material types. It"s interesting to note that the new system counts both
checkouts and checkins. There were 34,094 checkouts to 31,095 chec ins, a total activity
of 66,382 items. That information was not available on IRA. These figures give a truer
picture of the workload in the library since most items get handled twice. Another new
figure is the amount of holds (request.items) processed during the quarter. There were
I,127 items reserved by 1lashpee patrons. Each of these holds requires special handling
as well as a phone call to notify patrons the request item is available.
I have reproduced a pie chart of the breakdown of materials by type and age level. only
those materials with a significant percentage appear on this chart, while all types o
materials appear on the table.
On another note, Gerd a Sano retired from her position of Library Assistant on December
31, 2002. Gerd a was with the library for twenty-one years and served the citizens o
1lahpee very well. She will certainly be missed. we will be having a reception for
Gerda on January 22 at :00 pm. All are invited to attend to say good-bye and wish her
well in her retirernen . Her position has been advertised and interviews will be held this
Thursday. we should have the position filled by the next Trustees meeting.
Since our last meeting, I have met with the CIP committee to discuss the capital budget,
and with Joyce Mason to review the library budget. Kevin Connolly, chairman of the
Building C mmittee attended the CIP with me. The CIP committee repeated their feeling
that the town will support a cap of$3,000,000 for the library project. Anything above this
must come from other sources life fund raising. Items life temporary space would have
to fall under that cap or be part of the fund raising effort. I felt the meeting with Joyce
went well. She agreed it would be difficult to cut 10% from the library budget since many
of our costs are fixed. I am hopeful we will come closer to level funding than the 10%
cut scenario. I'm sure much depends on the amount of Binding the town actually gets
from the state. Additional cuts to local aid Will certainly impact all town departments.
