Mashpee Public Library
P.O. Bo 657
Mashpee, Ma 02649
The most exciting news of May 2004 was the vote on the library budget at Town
Meeting. David Burton placed a hold on the salary/wage lire item and rade
motion to increase the funding to the Departments requested amount rather
than the Finco n recommendation amount. This motion overwhelming passed
and the funding for the frozen position was restored. With the funding back in
place, I have submitted the position vacancy form to the Board of selectmen,
asking that the position be advertised and filled.
I had hoped to be on the agenda of the May 10, 2004 meeting, Unfortunately,
that meeting was already filled, I expect the request to fill the position would be
on the-following meeting. I am not sure of the date of that meeting. I have
heardaY "' and June 7 from different sources. I will be on vacation on May
24h. I'd like someone from the Trustees check on the status of our request and
verify if the position is on the agenda of the net Selectmen's meeting. This
person should also check with Joyce Mason to see if a Trustee should attend the
meeting or if she is willing to present this request to the. Board. David and I
have appeared on three occasions to answer questions about the position. she
may feel that further explanation is unnecessary. It is important that a lack of
presence by the Trustees or Director not be viewed as a lack of interest or
concern in filling this position.
We will probably not be able to fill the'position before mid July because of not
raking this week's agenda. Positions are advertised and open for applications
for two weeks. Interviewing, mal ing a selection and getting Selectmen`s
approval of a new hire at a selectmen's meeting will take a couple more weeks.
We may also have to make for a candidate to give notice at a current position.
On another note, I gave two tour of the library this week. Don Meyers,, a
candidate for Selectmen came in on May e to view the library and to get
answers to questions he had about whether or not Mashpee needed a new
library, I was very iron rssed with his willingness to come to the library and
b p .
spend time assessing our needs. He called me the next day o thank me for the
time and information. He has since written a letter of support published in the
Mashpee Enterprise for the library staffing and building project. He is very
p p ry
interested in seeing that an article on the building project comes before the
voters at October Town Meeting.
I was able to send Janet Trask to a training session at CLAMS on how to check in
serials on Millennium. This is a function that Kathy Makunas had handled until
retiring. The training is offered infrequently and the training had not been
